Please promote the Boycott of Israeli & those Jewish Products made in Israel or made outside of Israel that directly or indirectly support Israel.

The easiest way to inform people in boycotting Israeli and those Jewish products made in Israel or made outside of Israel that directly or indirectly support Israel is by simply sending out an email to all you email contacts, tweeting, sharing facebook pages, post boycott information on forums and different blogs, send out text/SMS messages to people in your mobile phone book, call people and tell them.

Note:  Jewish companies outside of Israel that do not support Israel by their produce, services or technology are not part of the Boycott.  We, as people of humanity and justice, support Jews against Zionism (few examples below):

The guilty companies (Boycott Israel card [front])

The guilty companies (Boycott Israel card [back])

Why are these companies on the boycott list?

Summary of how each company on the boycott list is supporting Israel:

Israels Keter Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of plastic consumer products. The Israeli plastics giant is privately owned by the Sagol family, and has a turnover of $1.1 billion, 90% of which is derived from overseas sales.

Its product range includes garden furniture, outdoor storage solutions and sheds, shelving systems and utility cabinets, tool boxes and storage products for the DIY market, household products, baby and toddler products.

Its brands, subsidiaries, and sister companies (all owned by the Sagol family) include ‘OutStanding Solutions’ (Keter garden storage), Lipski (plumbing accessories), Allibert (bathroom accessories), Curver (plastic home & food storage), Jardin (garden furniture), and Contico Europe (plastic storage boxes). Keter products are also sold under the Black & Decker, B&Q and Homebase brands.

Whilst the profits end up in Israel, not all the products are produced in Israel, for example Allibert has factories in France & Belgium, whilst Curver has factories in Poland & Hungary. Keter has 12 factories in Israel, 2 of which are in the illegal settlements.

Stanley toolboxes are also made in Israel by Israeli plastics company ZAG (90% owned by Stanley).

The Straus Group is Israels second largest food company with a turnover $1.8 billion in 2010 and 13,500 employees operating twenty-five production sites in twenty-one countries around the world. Its brands in the USA include Sabra (hummus dips) and Max Brenner (chocolate cafes). Strauss Coffee is currently the fifth-largest coffee company in the world, dominating the central and eastern European markets (Doncafe) as well as Brazil.

The Strauss Group on its website, on the page on “Corporate Responsibility – Community Involvement” reveal their deep rooted support for the Israeli army, and in particular the infamous Golani platoon, known for its brutality, which the Strauss group has “adopted” for over 30 years.

In July 1998 Danone opened its R&D facility in Israel – the Danone Insitute, and later the same year in October 1998 Mr. Franck Riboud, on behalf of Danone received the Jubilee Award by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.[Jubilee Award]

Danone owns a 20% share of Israel’s second largest food company, the Strauss Group. Danaone Israel is the hub supplying Danone products to the whole Middle-East including Turkey, Greece, Egypt and Jordan.

Israeli food company Tivall is one of the world’s leading suppliers of meat-substitute products. It has a turnover of $74 million and has 451 employees[59] It has a manufacturing base at Kibbutz Lochamei Hagetaot in Northern Israel, and a new facility in the Czech Republic.

Tivall brand products can mainly be found in health food stores – their website mentions Holland & Barrett, Fresh & Wild, and Planet Organic. But most of their sales are through the supermarkets who rebrand Tivall products as part of their own frozen “Meat-free” range. This includes Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s. Morrisons also stocks Tivall brand Frankfurter. Waitrose online site Ocado sells a full range of Tivall products.

Osem is Israels 4th largest food & beverages company (by turnover) after Tnuva, Strauss and Coca-Cola. It has a turnover of $712 million and nearly 5000 employees with 14 factories in Israel.

Its brands include Beit Hashitah (pickles), Of Tov (frozen meat products), Habait (ready made cakes) and Sabra Salads (ready-made salads and spreads). Osem also owns 58% of meat-substitute manufacturer Tivall Foods.

According to Osem’s website its products are sold in Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury and Morrison, with each store marketing them under their own label. Waitrose online site Ocado sells a range of Osem products from soups, crackers and croutons. Tesco online sells a range of Osem cakes.

In April 2009, Osem UK announced its acquisition of Yarden GB. Yarden GB’s product range includes chilled meats and Yarden wines from the Golan Heights Winery, located in Katzrin on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Golan Heights Winery exports 38% of all Israeli wines, its wine brands also include Gamla and Golan. According to Yarden GB’s website its products are available in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, Morrisons, Budgens, Somerfield, Waitrose and Harrods. Waitrose online site Ocado sells a range of Yarden meat and houmous products.

Nestlé is the world’s largest food company, it owns 53.8% share of leading Israeli food manufacturer Osem, an investment worth over $850 million.

In 1998, Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe on behalf of Nestle, received the Jubilee Award by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu [Jubilee Award]. Following the award in June 2002 Nestle opened its Research & Development Centre in Israel, in Sderot. And since then it has steadily increased its investment in Israel, its initial 10% stake in Osem has now grown to a controlling 53.8%. Nestle also owns Nespresso Israel Ltd in Tel Aviv which supplies coffee brewing equipment. In 2010 Nestle acquired a 51% stake in Israeli babyfood company Materna Laboratories for $72 million.

Nestle has 9 factories in Israel, which after China(18) and Russia(11) is the highest number in any country in Asia – disproportionately high when one considers its size and population. And in May 2011, Nestle announced plans to build another factory in Israel, an ice cream plant worth $40 million.

Nestlé also owns 30% stake in L’Oréal, another company on the boycott list.

Coca Cola

A detailed account of Coca-Cola’s links to Israel is provided here:

A summary:

From 1966 Coca-Cola has been a staunch supporter of Israel. In 1997 the Government of Israel Economic Mission honored Coca-Cola at the Israel Trade Award Dinner for its continued support of Israel for the last 30 years and for refusing to abide by the Arab League boycott of Israel.

Every year Coca Cola bankrolls the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce Awards which honors companies that have contributed most to the Israeli economy. In 2009 a Coca-Cola sponsored award went to Israel’s Lobby AIPAC for its successful lobbying of the Senate to reject of the UN call for “immediate ceasefire” and endorse the continuation of the Israel military assault on Gaza.

In 2008 Coca-Cola tasked the Israeli venture capital Challenge Fund to locate suitable investments in Israel with a promise of “a blank cheque” . This agreement is exceptional in the Israeli venture capital industry.

In 2009 Coca-Cola hosted a special reception at the Coca-Cola world headquarters to honour Brigadier-General Ben-Eliezer. Ben-Eliezer is a wanted war criminal, during the Six-Day War his unit was responsible for the execution of over 300 Egyptian POWs. Under Sharon, Ben-Eliezer served as Defence Minister presiding over the massacre at Jenin.

For the past two decades, nearly every year, Coca-Cola has sponsored the JCC Maccabi Games whose stated aim is to cultivate Jewish youth in an informal setting to “encourage their identification with the state of Israel”. As part of this, Coca Cola has sponsored young children to visit Israeli military bases and spend time with war criminals in order to engender empathy, in their own words “visit an air force base.. talk with the pilots that are the elite Israel Defense Force fighters of the army.”.

Coca-Cola Israel, Israel’s third largest food & beverages company, owns dairy farms in the illegal Israeli settlements of Shadmot Mechola in the Jordan Valley and a plant in the industrial zone of Katzerin in the occupied Golan Heights.

Eden Springs

Eden Springs is an Israeli water cooler company that in Israel steals water from the Salukia spring in the the illegally occupied Syrian Golan Heights. This is in violation of UN resolution 242 and Article 55 of the Hague Regulations which specify that you cannot acquire territory by war and that you cannot plunder the natural resources of occupied territory. To clarify, the water in Eden Springs Coolers found in the UK is sourced locally, but the profits go back to Israel to finance its illegal activities.

SodaStream is an Israeli company manufacturing and distributing home carbonating devices and flavorings for soft drinks. The company’s main plant is located in the industrial zone of Mishor Edomim which is an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Kav LaOved, the NGO committed to protecting the rights of disadvantaged workers in Israeli companies, has reported that SodaStream factory workers, in particular Palestinians, are paid less than half the minimum wage and has described the working conditions in the factory as “one of the worst”, with workers being fired if they complain of the conditions.

SodaStream brands include: SodaStream, Soda-Club, AlcoJet, Sprudelino, Aquabar, Gazoz, Aquafizz, Aquabubbler, Penguin, Sodamaker, Fountain Jet and Edition1. Its products are available in Argos, Asda, Comets, Currys, Harvey Nichols, Homebase, John Lewis, Robert Dyas, Selfridges and House of Fraser.

Howard Schultz, the founder, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks who also owns 31.6 million shares of Starbucks stock (worth around $1.4 billion in Nov 2011) is an active zionist.

In 1998 he was honoured by the Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah with “The Israel 50th Anniversary Friend of Zion Tribute Award” for his services to the zionist state in “playing a key role in promoting close alliance between the United States and Israel”. The ultra-right wing Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah funds Israeli arms fairs chaired by the butcher of Jenin, General Shaul Mofaz, and the zionist media pressure group, they were also implicated in the production and distribution of the infamous islamophobic film ‘Obesession’. Starbucks proudly displayed the award on the company’s website under the section of ‘awarda and accolades’ the Starbucks company has won, however, once the boycott started to bite the award mysteriously disappeared from its website.

Howard Shultz work as a propagandist for Israel has been praised by the Israeli Foreign Ministry as being key to Israel’s long-term PR success. On April 4th 2002, whilst the Israeli army was slaughtering Palestinians in Jenin Howard Shultz made a provocative speech blaming the Palestinians, suggesting the intifada was a manifestation of anti- Semitism, and asked people to unite behind Israel. Starbucks also sponsors fund raisers for Israel.

At a time when other businesses were desperately pulling out of Israel, Starbucks decided to help Israel’s floundering economy and open Starbucks in Israel. The venture failed but Shultz has vowed Starbucks will “return to Israel in due course”.

Starbucks has opened outlets in US bases in Afghanistan and Iraq, and at the illegal torture centre in Guantanamo Bay. Customer Relations say “Starbucks has the deepest respect and admiration for U.S. military.. who risk their lives to protect Americans and our values of freedom and democracy”. Petty Officer Barry Tate who is serving in Guantanamo Bay agrees that Starbucks is helping “lift the morale” of the guards and interrogator’s at Guantanamo Bay.

McDonald’s Corporation is a major corporate partner of the Jewish United Fund and Jewish Federation. According to the Jewish United Fund, through its Israel Commission it “works to maintain American military, economic and diplomatic support for Israel; monitors and, when necessary, responds to media coverage of Israel”. The Jewish United Fund also runs “Fun-filled Summer Family Missions to Israel” where families get to “visit an army base and meet with Israeli soldiers” and “visit our sister city, Kiryat Gat and see the important work we are doing there”. Kiryat Gat is built on stolen Palestinian land – the lands of the villages of Iraq Al Manshiya and Al-Faluja whose residents were ethnically cleansed in 1949 in contravention of International Law. Through its “Partnership to Israel” programme, the Jewish United Fund provides $1.3 million annually to help further settlement and development of Kiryat Gat. The Jewish Federation, through its Israel Action Network is tasked to fight “efforts to boycott Israeli products” and “campaigns, such as equating Israel with apartheid South Africa”.

Another way McDonald’s supports the Jewish United Fund is by running a partnership scheme whereby they will match any donation an employee make to the Jewish United Fund with its own equal size donation.

McDonald’s first restaurant in the Middle East was in Israel, opened in 1993, since then it has 160 restaurants in Israel (1996) with a 60% market share, employing around 4000 Israelis. Since April 2009 McDonald’s has also opened 15 branches of McCafe chain in Israel, with plans to open 10 new branches every year.

McDonalds discriminates against its Arab workers, in 2004 it sacked an Arab worker in Israel because she was caught speaking arabic to another Arab employee. Arabic, along with Hebrew, is the official language of Israel spoken by 20% of the population.

According to the American Jewish Committee (AJC), whose Executive Director “regularly meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu”, McDonald’s in July 2001 immediately pulled an advertising campaign in Egypt when the ADC contacted them to complaint that the singer featured in the advert had in the past performed a song critical of Israel. Within 24 hours of the complaint, the advert was cancelled and according to the Egyptian franchise of McDonald’s “all copies of the tapes were whisked ‘back to the main offices’”!

Israeli Fresh Produce

In 2010 exports of Israeli fresh agricultural produce was worth $1.41 billion and most of it, some 87% was exported to Europe (UN Commodity Trade Statistics). Fruit, vegetables and herbs grown in Israel and on its settlements in the West Bank can be seen on sale at all the major supermarkets and greengrocers. Always check the label – avoid Israel and West Bank.

Until recently the main player was Israeli state owned company Carmel Agrexco, responsible for about 60-70% of all Israel’s agricultural exports. But in September 2011 Agrexco went bankrupt. This was due in part to fact that Agrexco has been the target of a sustained international boycott campaign. It has been recently reported that the Israeli Bickel Export Group has acquired Agrexco with plans to revive it in 2012 (target sales 50 million euros).

With the privately owned Israeli company Mehadrin Tnuport Export (MTEX) set to take Agrexco’s place as Israel’s biggest agricultural exporter the focus of the international boycott campaign is now firmly on MTEX with actions already having taken place (Nov 2011) outside its UK headquarters in Borehamwood and its French headquarters in Chateaurenard.

MTEX is Israel’s largest grower and exporter of citrus fruit responsible for 65% of overseas sales of Israel’s most recognisable brand on the supermarket shelves – JAFFA. They supply most of the supermarkets including Tesco and Sainsburys. MTEX ownes 50% of Miriam Shoham Ltd whose mangoes and pomegranates are available in Tescos and Asda.

Hadiklaim, the Israeli Date Growers Cooperative, which includes illegal settler plantations in the Jordan Valley, sells 65% of all Israeli dates. Its dates have brand names King Solomon, Jordan River, Tamara, Karsten Farms / Kalahari and Bomaja. Agrexco date brands include Jordan Plains and Jordan Valley.

Most supermarkets sell fresh herbs sourced from the illegal Israeli settlements on the West Bank. These include basil, sage, chives, rosemary, parsely, sorrel, marjoram, mint, thyme and tarragon. They are labelled ‘West Bank’ or ‘Israel’. ‘West Bank’ never refers to Palestinian goods as they don’t make it past the military checkpoints. Often settlements goods are labelled ‘Produce of Israel’ to avoid payment of tariffs when entering the EU – according to the EU-Israel Association Agreement goods produced outside the recognised borders of Israel (ie on the Israeli settlements on the Palestinian Occupied Territories) are not exhempt from import duties. A July 2008 Channel 4 news report revealed herbs grown on the illegal No’omi settlement on the West Bank, destined for the UK, were being mislabelled ‘produce of Israel’ in breach of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Other Israeli fresh produce brands to avoid include Edom (peppers, tomatoes and mangoes), Carmy (sweet potatoes), AdaFresh (herbs), Arava (peppers, Tomatoes, herbs) and Tali (table grapes).

[Jubilee Award]On October 14, 1998, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu presented a select group of international business people with the highest tribute ever awarded by the “State of Israel”. The Jubilee Award, marking Israel’s fiftieth year of independence, recognizes those individuals and organizations, that through their investments and trade relationships, have done the most to strengthen the Israeli economy.

Frequently Asked Question

Why so many companies?

Our strategy is to have a focused campaign where individual Israeli companies are targeted wherever possible rather than wide boycotts of whole stores. This means that whilst there are more brands on the list, they are actually easier to boycott. So for example whilst B&Q and Homebase are major sellers of Israeli plastic giant Keter’s products we are calling for a focused boycott of each Keter related brand – OutStanding, Lipski, Jardin, Allibert, Curver and Contico, rather than a blanket boycott of these stores.

Why are some of the brands in the previous Boycott Israel Campaign missing from this campaign?

Over time many companies have reconsidered their support for Israel and some have divested from Israel due to many reasons including the accumulated pressure of the boycott. These changes are reflected in the new card.

Disney, working with the Israeli embassy, was given 1.8 million dollars by Israel to promote Jerusalem as the capital of Israel at a special exhibition at its Epcot centre in Florida, strategically positioned so that every visitor to the centre would have to walk through the exhibition in order to reach the exit. Jerusalem is an illegally occupied Palestinian city and under international law can NEVER be the capital of Israel. The exhibition has since been removed so Disney is no longer on the boycott list.

Sara Lee

Sara Lee has divested its large stake in the Israeli textile giant Delta Galil so it along with its two dozen plus brands have all been removed from the boycott list.

Nokia Ventures Organization which had so heavily invested in Israel is no longer part of Nokia and is now called BlueRun Ventures and has many investors now. Note that Nokia is still one of its investors, but its stake in Israel is now no more prominent than countless other technology companies who are not on the boycott list, so Nokia has also been removed from the list.

Arsenal FC

Following a concerted campaign, Arsenal Football Club’s contract with the Israeli Tourism board to promote Israel as the teams “official and exclusive travel destination” on its digital perimeter boards (to an estimated 700 million viewers in 198 countries) was not renewed. Subsequently, Arsenal FC has been removed from the boycott list. Note that Arsenal still runs ‘Arsenal in the Galilee’ coaching project in Israel.

Selfridges flagship store in London was picketed for stocking a range of settlement products including Ahava and soon a boycott of the store followed. It no longer sells Ahava Dead Sea products on its website, although it does advertise Estee Lauder Origins ‘body scrubs’ which include Dead Sea salts. As part of our strategy of a more focused boycott campaign where individual Israeli brands like Ahava are targeted, Selfridges in no longer on the boycott list.

Whilst Danone is still on the boycott list, it has gone through some changes and lost some of its famous brands and these are no longer on the boycott list. Jacob biscuits is now owned by United Biscuits; HP foods and Lea & Perrins is now owned by H.J. Heinz; and similarly Galbani and LU Biscuits are also no longer owned by Danone.

What is the Boycott Israel card and how can I get one?

The Boycott Israel card is a handy sized card listing the companies that give support to apartheid Israel. The card is designed to be carried in your wallet or purse so that when you are out shopping you know what products to avoid.

Over the past 10 years, in conjunction with the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), we have published many versions of the Boycott Israel card. They began with credit card size to the now familiar A7 size, each version has seen many, many print runs, with perhaps a total distribution in excess of one million cards worldwide. This latest version was launched on 2nd December 2011.

Further Information

In 1998 Mr. Robert P. Van der Merwe, chairman of Kimberly-Clark Europe received the Jubilee Award by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. This is the highest tribute ever awarded by the “State of Israel” in recognition of those individuals and organizations, that through their investments and trade relationships, have done the most to strengthen the Israeli economy.

From 1966 onward Coca-Cola has been a staunch supporter of Israel. Recently the Government of Israel Economic Mission honored Coca-Cola at the Israel Trade Award Dinner for its continued support of Israel for the last 30 years and for refusing to abide by the Arab League boycott of Israel.

Swiss food giant Nestle will set up a global research and development center for snack foods next year in Sderot, a town in Israel’s Negev desert, the Maariv newspaper reported on Sunday. Nestle owns 50.1 percent of Israeli food maker Osem Investments and the two together produce snack foods at a plant in Sderot.

Intel is one of the biggest supporters of Israel. Their very first development center outside the US was opened in Haifa in 1974. Since then they have continued pouring investment in to Israel. By year 2000 they employed over 4000 Israelis. Exports from their Lachish-Qiryat Gat plant in israel total $3 million a day at peak capacity – approximately $ 1 billion a year. The Intel plant at “Qiryat Gat” is built on land Israel confiscated from the Palestinian villages of Iraq al Manshiya. Iraq al Manshiya was a village of 2000 people living in 300 houses with two mosques and one school. The original Palestinian inhabitants were terrorized out of the village and then the whole village was razed to the ground to prepare the way for the new Israeli settlement of Qiryat Gat. Today the remaining population from Iraq al Manshiya is still not allowed to return.

In 1998, Mr. Lucien Nessim of Sara Lee Personal Products received the Jubilee Award by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. This is the highest tribute ever awarded by the “State of Israel” in recognition of those individuals and organizations, that through their investments and trade relationships, have done the most to strengthen the Israeli economy

The Disney Company is owned by Jewish Mogul Michael Eisner. He owns a vast media empire that includes the ABC television network, numerous news dailies, national magazines, Hollywood film companies and a large number of radio stations. One radio station in Los Angeles, KABC 790 AM recently broadcast comments by Jewess Gloria Alred to the effect that the Islamic prisoners at Guantanamo should be tortured by having their “balls” extracted with pliers in order to make them talk. The news and commentaries made through Michael Eisner’s media octopus are extremely Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian.

A good tip for identifying the products to boycott from Denmark, Israel, Netherlands, France, Norwary and German. Every bar Coded product in the market contains its country code included in barcode digits. Please check the barcode of any product before you buy.

Check the first 3 digits from the LEFT.

Example, an Israeli product will have barcode like:

729 3453459070

The following list is given according the priority as the worst at top and then second worst is next.

729 Israel

570 – 579 Denmark (i.e. 570, 571… 579)

870 – 879 Netherlands (i.e. 870,871… 879)

*** UPDATED OCTOBER 2009 ***

Please find below a documentary published on Youtube, it is very important that this information is passed on to everyone, hence the boycott is revived in peoples minds.

Please also listen to George Galloway explaining how the Jewish state works in destroying Islamic values, also important information regarding the boycott.

*** UPDATED MAY 2010 ***

Jew’s against Israel:

For those who send me emails/comments relating to how Israel has every right to exist even with the ever growing evidence and facts of treatment of Palestinians, you need to watch the following videos available in the public domain to hear the truth (only if you can handle it). Listen to their own people shout out AGAINST Israel.

The following video is amazing, especially how the Rabi tells how Jews and Muslims co-existed prior to the birth of Israel (it brought tears to my eyes after watching the speaker).

Please promote this article, copy the content or email the link to this article to all your email contacts. The truth cannot be denied.

All major UK retailers sell Israeli goods, and most of them sell produce from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Some have made statements in support of Zionism and some have contracts with Israeli companies.

There is a growing movement to boycott Israeli goods in solidarity with the people of Palestine and in line with an international call for boycott, divestment and sanctions. There have been reports in the press that Israeli producers are experiencing a decline in demand for Israeli produce since the bombardment of Gaza in January 2009. This could be the beginning of a snowball effect for the global boycott movement.

Tesco stores stock a large amount of produce grown in the Occupied Territories and purchased from the Israeli state, including fruit and vegetables from producer Carmel-Agrexco. Israeli products stocked by Tesco include fruit juice, mangoes, avocados, grapes, stonefruit, dates, herbs, pickled cucumbers, Exquisa potatoes, mixed peppers (from Israel and a second country of origin), Barkan wine, Yarden wine, biscuits, cold meat, dips, Osem soups and cakes, snacks by Beigel & Beigel, Telma (soup mixes and cubes, noodles etc) and socks (Tesco’s own brand).

Tesco sells products from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, many of which are exported by Carmel Agrexco. The company admitted sourcing ‘a number of products’ from illegal settlements, including avocados, herbs, grapes and stonefruit, such as peaches, from farms in the West Bank and Golan Heights. In 2006 War on Want reported that Tesco sells Beigel and Beigel products sourced from the settlements. Tesco also sells gas cylinders for products made by settlement company Soda Club, and repackages settlement dates from Hadiklaim as Tesco own brand dates. Mehadrin-Tnuport Export Company (MTex) supplies Tesco with settlement citrus fruit and there are links between Tesco and the Arava settlement company.

In October 2007, a group of campaigners from the Brighton Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group entered Tomer settlement in the occupied Jordan Valley and photographed medjoul dates, packaged by Carmel Agrexco, labelled ‘Made in Israel’ and marked as bound for Tesco stores.

Products exported as ‘Made in Israel’ benefit from the preferential trade terms of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which came into effect in 2000. Settlement products, however, are excluded from the beneficial terms of the EU-IAA.

When ITN screened an expose in 2007 accusing supermarkets of misleading British consumers, Tesco admitted it had acted “in error” and stated that Israeli dates “originating solely in the West Bank will [in the future] be labelled as such.”

BIGCampaign and others groups have been campaigning against the ‘West Bank’ label as it misleads consumers into believing produce from illegal settlements is actually Palestinian. The Palestinian General Delegation to the UK has written a letter of protest to Tesco, and other retailers, for persisting in the use of this misleading label.

Tesco says that ‘freedom of choice’ is one of the company’s priorities and consumers can choose not to buy Israeli products. However, in correspondence with campaigners in 2006, Tesco representatives said they were phasing out Tesco’s line of Israeli peppers due to consumer pressure. Boycott Israeli Goods campaigners have also consistently attended the Tesco AGM to raise the issue of settlement produce and propose a boycott of Israeli goods.

John Porter, one of the principal shareholders in Tesco, also has substantial investments in Israeli companies. In 2000, Tesco awarded a $1 million IT contract to the Israeli firm Tescom to provide a solution for Tesco’s Year 2000 conversion requirements.

During the bombing of Gaza, Tesco was targeted across the country by campaigners calling for a boycott of Israeli goods. In Swansea, activists stole Israeli settlement produce from Tesco and sprayed it with red dye to highlight Tesco’s complicity in Israel’s war crimes by profiting from settlement produce and enabling the settlements to trade and profit from their illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

Marks & Spencer

Historically, Marks & Spencer has made statements in support of Zionism. Lord Sieff, chairman and founder of M&S who died in 2001, made several statements in support of Israel’s military policies. In 1941, Sieff said that “large sections of the Arab population of Palestine should be transplanted to Iraq and other Middle-Eastern Arab States” (Jewish Chronicle, 21/09/1941). In 1990, Sieff, in a book entitled On Management: The Marks and Spencer Way, wrote that one of the fundamental objectives of M&S was to “aid the economic development of Israel.”

There have been no reports of M&S openly showing ideological support for Israel since 2004. The retail company has repeatedly asserted that “[it has] no ‘special’ relationship with any government, political party or religious group” but accepts that M&S does “make representations to governments in support of [its] commercial aims.” M&S management has not, to our knowledge, commented on Lord Sieff’s remarks in support of Zionism and has not made a statement as to whether the current management stands by them.

In 1998, Sir Richard Greenbury, then CEO of Marks & Spencer, received the Jubilee Award from Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. In 2000, the Jerusalem Report stated that “M&S supports Israel with $233 million in trade each year.”

In October 2000, the Jewish Chronicle reported that the British-Israel Chamber of Commerce (B-ICC) had held meetings at Marks & Spencer’s offices in Baker Street. However, in 2008 the store claimed that M&S “do not host meetings on our premises for the B-ICC.” Nevertheless, in December 2004, Stuart Rose, CEO of Marks and Spencer at the time, was a listed speaker at the annual dinner of the B-ICC.

When questioned in correspondence about the sale of Israeli goods in M&S stores in 2008, an M&S spokesperson said that the company buys “from Israel as… from 70 other countries…” and went on to state that the company would continue to do so. The letter continued to say that, “[w]e always put the country of origin on the products we sell. Where we buy Israeli products we label them as products of Israel.”

M&S stocks Israeli grapes, lychees, figs, plums, dates, fresh herbs, sweet potatoes, potatoes (Maris Piper, Desiree, Jacket, Marfona, and King Edward). Many of these products are imported through Carmel-Agrexco, a company part-owned by the Israeli state.

M&S also stocks large quantities of Delta Galil clothing, largely underwear. Delta Galil is Israel’s largest manufacturer and marketer of textiles. It is also a major beneficiary of the establishment of ‘Qualifying Industrial Zones’ (QIZ) in Egypt and Jordan which promote an unequal normalisation of trade arrangements between Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Egypt and Jordan. Marks and Spencer also sells textiles produced by Israeli firms, Solog and Polgat.

Until very recently, M&S openly sold products from illegal Israeli settlements. The Guardian reported in 2004 that the company stocked an extensive range of settlement products. Since 2007, however, M&S has made repeated statements to the press claiming that they do not stock goods from the Occupied Territories (see here, for example). In 2008, the store wrote: “We do not buy products from the West Bank, Golan Heights or Gaza as we cannot safely visit the suppliers in these areas because of the current security situation.” It seems probable that the move to cease selling settlement products was, in fact, due to effective campaigning, protests and fear of adverse press coverage.

But despite the above assurance, there is evidence that M&S continues to stock Hadiklaim dates packaged as an M&S own brand product. According to a recent report by School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Hadiklaim, the Israel Date Growers’ Cooperative Ltd, “exports dates from Israel and from the occupied territories, especially Israeli settlements in the Jordan Valley.”

In correspondence with SOAS in 2008, David Gregory, Technical Food Director for M&S, stated the following:

“In the past, we have sold dates from this region. However, we made a policy decision sometime ago to cease all purchases from this area. However, our UK suppliers do buy raw material (dates) from the organisation Hadiklaim on our behalf. The contract explicitly prohibits purchase from Palestinian Territories and Hadiklaim source the dates from elsewhere within Israel to satisfy our requirements. Traceability systems are in place to confirm the source of the dates.”

M&S has faced sustained protests due to their historic ideological support for the Israeli state and because of their policy of stocking Israeli goods. Pickets have been held and store signs and billboards subvertised. In Manchester, three pickets were held in January 2009 in response to the bombing of Gaza. Weekly demonstrations have been held in Newcastle and in London. M&S has repeatedly ignored campaigners’ representations against the continued sale of Israeli goods.

ASDA sells Israeli basil, tarragon, rosemary, sage, chives, dill, mint, thyme, passion fruit, mangoes, Blackfine plums, autumn red plums, medjoul dates, dragon fruit, pomegranates, avocados, organic sweet potatoes, sweet pointed peppers (red), sweet potatoes (“Georgia Jet”), frozen meat, biscuits, table wine (red, white, rose & sparkling), garden storage units and tinned grapefruit. ASDA also sells Carmel-Agrexco products (see above).

Since ITN’s 2007 report, ASDA has made several statements denying that it stocks goods in its stores from the ‘West Bank’ (i.e. settlement goods). However, ASDA has recently made several ambiguous statements contradicting its earlier stance. A spokesperson from the company recently wrote, in correspondence with campaigners: “I am sure you can imagine it is very difficult for ASDA to take a position on behalf of all our customers over politically controversial issues such as the current conflict you refer to (the occupation of Palestine). On the sourcing of products from overseas we are always guided by the position of the UK Government and by the European Union on trade policy.”

There is evidence that ASDA does stock goods from illegal Israeli settlements in its UK stores. ASDA stocks potatoes from Mehadrin-Tnuport Export Company (MTex). MTex is now the second-largest Israeli exporter of fresh produce to the UK after Agrexco. In 2005, the company exported 1,500 tonnes to the UK, with a value of £25 million. MTex exports fruit and vegetables from the region, stretching from Lake Tiberias to the Dead Sea; this includes territory both inside and outside the green line.

Campaigners have recently reported seeing herbs labelled ‘West Bank Israeli Settlements’ in ASDA stores. At least that’s accurate labelling but it does contradict ASDA’s previous statements to the press.

Campaigners have held many pickets of ASDA stores in Brighton and London in 2009 protesting against their sale of Israeli goods.

Despite the Co-operative family of businesses’ ethical image, the shelves of its supermarkets and high street stores have been found to carry Israeli products, including Carmel mangoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, sweet peppers (grown by Sulat), cherry tomatoes, herbs, passion fruit, Jaffa oranges and own brand tinned grapefruit.

The Co-op has faced pickets and repeated representations from consumers and campaigners over its sale of produce from illegal settlements and Israeli produce. In the last year, criticism has centred around the sale of settlement produce. For example, campaigners attended the Co-operative Group South East Region General Meeting in January 2008 and raised concerns about the ethics of selling settlement produce. The Co-op board undertook to look into conditions on settlement farms. Throughout the year, the issue was raised with Co-op management by members of the Co-op and its customers.

On the 5th January 2009 Len Wardle, Co-operative Group chair, wrote:

“The Co-operative Group board has decided to suspend sourcing products from illegal West Bank settlements. However, we will continue to trade with Israel and will seek to develop trading links with Palestinian farmers. The Co-operative Group only rarely curtails trade with particular countries or regions. However, in the case of the illegal settlement in the Israeli controlled occupied territories, it has proven to be all but impossible to ensure that supplies derived from the region are not perpetuating injustice and unfair terms of trade. We will no longer source dates, grapes and a number of herbs from the illegal West Bank settlements and will be phasing out the use of similar items from our own brand products.”

In making this statement, the Co-op is the first store to base its reasons for ceasing the sale of settlement goods on ethical concerns. The statement is weaker in some ways than that of M&S, but only in that it precludes the sale of West Bank goods and not produce from the Golan Heights. It is also unclear whether the Co-op’s definition of the West Bank includes East Jerusalem. Moreover, the Co-operative Group does not make any assurance that it will not sell products in its stores supplied by companies which source products from both the settlements and 1948 Israel, such as Hadiklaim, M-Tex and Carmel Agrexco.

In November 2008, YNet claimed that the Co-op had met with the Co-op Israel (a separate organisation) and agreed to open a chain of kosher supermarkets which will be equally owned by Co-op Israel and the UK Co-op. The UK Co-op has refuted this claim but admitted that a meeting took place with Co-op Israel.

On 16th February, 2009, students at the University of Aberdeen protested at the university’s Elphinstone Hall, where Co-op members were meeting, to pressure the food retailer to ban all Israeli products from its stores. A Co-op representative at the meeting said a motion on the subject of Israeli goods was due to be discussed by the organisation’s executive.

Waitrose stocks Israeli basil, tarragon, thyme, lemon thyme, rosemary, chives, sage, oregano, mint, curly leaf parsley, ‘Red Rosa’ pears, sharon fruit, passion fruit, figs, lychees, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, grapes, strawberries, pomelos, pomegranates, galia melons, dragonfruit, organic medjoul dates, hadrawi dates, “Deglet Nour” dates, Cherry tomatoes, sweet potatoes, ‘Pamino’ peppers, ‘Red Romano’ peppers, mixed peppers, goods from the Tivall vegetarian food range, ‘Food for Thought’ snacks by Beigel & Beigel, cold meat, biscuits, dips and Dead Sea Magik cosmetics (found in John Lewis stores).

Waitrose has refused to enter into any debate about the sale of Israeli goods and its management has repeatedly refused to meet with campaigners. In February 2009, a spokesperson for the store reiterated that Waitrose was “unable to arrange a meeting”. In a letter to one customer, Waitrose said: “Whatever our own views may be about Israeli products, we do not think it is right to ask our buyers to base their choice of products on any other criteria than the commercial ones of quality and value for money.”

Waitrose stocks goods from illegal Israeli settlements and has been unresponsive to the ITN and More 4 reports which have led other stores to label their goods more clearly. The supermarket chain stocks a large range of products sourced from Carmel Agrexco, including a wide variety of organic herbs and vegetables grown on Israeli settlements, mainly in the Jordan Valley, and certified as organic by the Soil Association. Although Waitrose has not made statements to the press about labelling, a store spokesperson said “we clearly label our food to enable our customers to make informed choices.” It appears unclear, however, whether Waitrose still labels some goods from illegal settlements as ‘Made in Israel’.

According to War on Want’s Profiting from the Occupation report, Waitrose sells Beigel and Beigel products. Beigel and Beigel Ltd. is located in the Barkan industrial zone in the occupied West Bank and produces pretzels, savoury biscuits and crackers.

The John Lewis Partnership is one of the only large retailers to sell Ahava beauty products. Ahava is a settlement company based on the illegal settlement of Mitzpe Shalem. Waitrose also sells dates from settler company Hadiklaim (see above).

Waitrose claims that, if it ceased to deal with Israeli settlements, it would impact on Palestinian farmers. In correspondence with consumers, the retailer has described the settlement farms it works with as “joint Israeli and Palestinian” enterprises. In February 2009, a spokesperson wrote: “We currently take organic cut herbs from two farms in the West Bank on which a mixed Palestinian-Israeli workforce have worked side by side for many years.”

Waitrose has responded to some concerns about the conditions of labourers on settlement farms. However, the response has been to assure customers that each ‘supplier’ audits the relevant settlement farms using a “tight criteria” that relates to “worker hours, salaries and employment contracts.” This effectively means that Waitrose entrusts the auditing of settlement farms to the settlement company supplying the produce, presumably Carmel Agrexco. Waitrose claims that its technical directors have inspected its supplier farms in the West Bank.

Overall, Waitrose has been one of the most intransigent British supermarkets when faced with concern over sale of Israeli produce and Israeli settler produce. The chain has been the subject of protests and pickets across the UK, including in Brighton and London where protesters dressed as burglars and displayed banners claiming “Waitrose sells stolen goods”.

Sainsbury’s sells Israeli oranges, grapefruit, avocados, strawberries, thyme, tarragon, parsley, coriander, rosemary, passion fruit, sharon fruit, ‘Shelly’ mangoes, mejdoul dates, lychees, fresh figs, plums, fruit juice, minneola (tangerines), potatoes (‘Desiree’, ‘Vivaldi’, ‘Rooster’, white, baking, baby, salad), sweet potatoes, peppers (‘Ramiro’), pickled cucumbers, pickled olives, radishes, ‘Splendid’ flowers, ‘Basics’ flowers, ‘Saveur Mediterranean’ hummous, turkey, smoked chicken breast, Rumples party pretzels, Osem croutons, Telma chicken soup mix and soups, feta cheese, Tivall vegetarian food range, ‘Food for Thought’ dips, table wine (red, white, rose & sparkling), Kiddush wine and Yarden wine and Osem foods.

This extensive list includes many products from illegal Israeli settlements, including fresh lemon grass from the West Bank and Sainsbury’s ‘Taste the Difference’ Pomodorino tomatoes. Sainsbury’s stocks Hadiklaim dates labelled ‘Made in West Bank’ and products from Soda Club, which has an office based in the settlement of Ma’leh Adumin.

Sainsbury’s has said, in correspondence with Boycott Israeli Goods Campaign supporters, that the store is not a political organisation and it does not boycott products from any country. Sainsbury’s does acknowledge, however, that “ethical trading is a growing area of concern for our company and consumers” and that it has an “ethical trading policy.” Whether ethical trading concerns would extend to the sale of goods from an apartheid regime on occupied land, that’s not something the retailer seems interested in answering.

Palestine solidarity campaigners have attended Sainsbury’s PLC shareholders meeting several years running, in an attempt to persuade the company to stop selling Israeli goods and to label its produce more accurately.

Sainsbury’s says it is committed to ‘informative labelling’, despite describing one piece of produce as being from ‘Gaza Strip, Israel’. After the 2007 ITN report about mislabelling of settlement Medjoul dates as ‘Produce of Israel’, Sainsbury’s admitted that it had mislabelled produce and stated that “as from today, all dates from the West Bank will be labelled as coming from the West Bank. We are investigating how this error occurred.”

Meetings have been held between Sainsbury’s management and campaigners and NGOs about the labelling of settlement goods. At a meeting in 2009, James Clark, a ‘public affairs and stakeholder relations spokesperson’, told campaigners that Justin King, CEO of J Sainsbury plc, had written to Hilary Benn, Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), asking him to clarify how retailers should label goods from Israeli settlements. Mr Clark said Sainsbury’s would be revising its labelling policy in the next six months and might consider labelling settlement produce ‘Produce of Israeli Settlement’. Mr Clark was not prepared to listen to arguments that settlements were illegal and argued that the store did not have instructions to this effect from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, despite the fact that this is clearly set out on the FCO website.

Sainsburys have been picketed across the UK by campaigners calling for a boycott of Israeli goods.

Somerfield sells both Israeli goods and settlement goods in its 880 stores. Apax Partners, an investment company with subsidiaries in Israel and which advises funds holding shares in Israeli settlement companies Tnuva, Agrexco Agricultural Export Company and Field Produce Ltd, has a majority of shares in Somerfield.

It seems that because of the takeover by the consortium dominated by Apax Partners in December 2005, Somerfield rescinded its commitment to the Ethical Trading Initiative. However, as of December 2008, Somerfield is in the process of being taken over by the Cooperative Group. It remains to be seen whether Somerfield, under new ownership, will take a similar stance to the Co-op against the sale of Israeli settlement produce.

Things are looking up for 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed, the robotics/engineering enthusiast who brought his homemade clock to school and ended up getting arrested.

The incident happened in Irving, Texas, on Monday. According to the Dallas Morning News, Mohamed built the clock and brought it in to show his teacher at MacArthur High School. He was then questioned by police and taken into custody for building what the police call a “hoax bomb.”

Today, Mohamed has received props for his science skills and invites to both the White House and Facebook. From President Obama via Twitter:

And from Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook:

“Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest. The future belongs to people like Ahmed,” Zuckerberg posted. “Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I’d love to meet you. Keep building.”

The Dallas Morning News reports that at a press conference this a.m., Police Chief Larry Boyd said that while the device, when confiscated, was “suspicious in nature,” the follow-up investigation showed that it was a “homemade experiment, and there’s no evidence to support the perception he intended to create alarm.”

Mohamed’s arrest called into question whether he was treated differently because of prejudice against Muslims. His father expressed “shock” at the treatment of his son, as he was surrounded by five police and handcuffed with no attempts to reach his parents.

“He just wants to invent good things for mankind,” Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, told the Dallas Morning News. “But because his name is Mohamed and because of Sept. 11, I think my son got mistreated.”

In case you missed it, here is the shot of Mohamed in handcuffs, wearing a NASA shirt no less:

#IStandWithAhmed is the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter, with more than 634,000 tweets as of this time.

Watch Mohamed talk about his love of inventing stuff and his arrest in this Dallas Morning News video below:

Ahmed Mohamed swept up, ‘hoax bomb’ charges swept away as Irving teen’s story floods social media

Ahmed Mohamed, 14, shows a photographer some of the electronics components in the bedroom that doubles as his workshop at his family’s Irving home. At left is Ahmed’s 3-year-old sister, Fatima Mohamed.

Irving’s police chief announced Wednesday that charges won’t be filed against Ahmed Mohamed, the MacArthur High School freshman arrested Monday after he brought what school officials and police described as a “hoax bomb” on campus.

At a joint press conference with Irving ISD, Chief Larry Boyd said the device — confiscated by an English teacher despite the teen’s insistence that it was a clock — was “certainly suspicious in nature.”

School officers questioned Ahmed about the device and why Ahmed had brought it to school. Boyd said Ahmed was then handcuffed “for his safety and for the safety of the officers” and taken to a juvenile detention center. He was later released to his parents, Boyd said.

“The follow-up investigation revealed the device apparently was a homemade experiment, and there’s no evidence to support the perception he intended to create alarm,” Boyd said, describing the incident as a “naive accident.”

Asked if the teen’s religious beliefs factored into his arrest, Boyd said the reaction “would have been the same” under any circumstances.

“We live in an age where you can’t take things like that to school,” he said. “Of course we’ve seen across our country horrific things happen, so we have to err on the side of caution.”

The chief touted the “outstanding relationship” he’s had with the Muslim community in Irving. He said he talked to members of the Muslim community this morning and plans to meet with Ahmed’s father later today.

Speaking at an afternoon news conference outside the family’s home, Ahmed’s father said he’s proud of his son and wowed by his skills.

“He fixed my phone, my car, my computer,” Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed said. “He is a very smart, brilliant kid.”

Mohamed said he’s lived in America for 30 years, but this was a new experience for him.

“That is not America,” Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed said of his son’s humiliation after being handcuffed in front of his classmates.

But Mohamed said he’s also been touched by the outpouring of support for his son.

“What is happening is touching the heart of everyone with children,” he said. “And that is America.”

Ahmed, himself, also spoke, saying he was saddened by the initial reaction his invention provoked but amazed at what has followed.

“It made me really happy to see all these people support me,” he said.

The teen said he hasn’t spoken to anyone from MacArthur High, where he was suspended until Thursday.

“I’m thinking about transferring from MacArthur to any other school,” Ahmed said.

Irving ISD spokeswoman Lesley Weaver also addressed the media, saying that information “made public to this point has been very unbalanced.”

She declined to provide details on how school officials handled the incident, citing laws intended to safeguard student privacy.

“We were doing everything with an abundance of caution to protect all of our students in Irving,” she said.

Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne took to Facebook to defend the actions of the school district and police, saying their daily work helped make Irving “one of the safest cities in the country.”

“I do not fault the school or the police for looking into what they saw as a potential threat,” Van Duyne wrote. “We have all seen terrible and violent acts committed in schools. … Perhaps some of those could have been prevented and lives could have been spared if people were more vigilant.”

The mayor later amended her post, acknowledging that she would be “very upset” had the same thing happened to her own child.

“It is my sincere desire that Irving ISD students are encouraged to use their creativity, develop innovations and explore their interests in a manner that fosters higher learning,” Van Duyne wrote. “Hopefully, we can all learn from this week’s events and the student, who has obvious gifts, will not feel at all discouraged from pursuing his talent in electronics and engineering.”

Shortly after the press conference, President Barack Obama extended a Twitter invitation for Ahmed to bring his “cool clock” to the White House. “We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great,” the tweet read.

Josh Earnest, Obama’s press secretary, said the case goes to show how stereotypes can cloud the judgment of even the most “good-hearted people.”

“It’s clear that at least some of Ahmed’s teachers failed him,” Earnest said. “That’s too bad, but it’s not too late for all of us to use this as a teachable moment and to search our own conscience for biases in whatever form they take.”

The White House also extended the teen an invitation to speak with NASA scientists and astronauts at next month’s Astronomy Night.

Ahmed, still wearing the NASA shirt he was arrested in, said Wednesday that he gladly accepted the White House invitation.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also joined the social media chorus, extending an open invitation to visit and exhorting Ahmed to “keep building.”

“Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest,” Zuckerberg wrote. “The future belongs to people like Ahmed.”

Earlier Wednesday at a modest, red-brick house in central Irving, Ahmed and his family welcomed media crews at the front door and in the backyard as they tried to come to grips with the boy’s overnight ascension to international celebrity.

His sisters, 18-year-old Eyman and 17-year-old Ayisha, could hardly keep up with the tweets and stunning news about their little brother. Because Ahmed was never much for social media, the girls set up a Twitter account for him,@IStandWithAhmed, and watched it balloon to thousands of followers within hours.

“We’re trending No. 1!” Ayisha cried to her sister, holding a cellphone over a stuffed coffee table in the living room.

“It’s a blessing and a curse,” Ayisha said of Ahmed’s arrest and subsequent fame. “I don’t think he’ll ever be able to live normally again.”

But they were happy for invitations to visit companies including Google and to move and study in other cities, and for the tweets of support, including one from Hillary Clinton. They recalled how, barely two days earlier, their brother described struggling to hold back tears in front of police officers after his arrest.

Ahmed, after finishing up another interview in the backyard, recalled his emotions as he was handcuffed at Irving MacArthur High School and removed from campus.

“I was really mad,” Ahmed said as he looked at a much-retweeted photo of himself in handcuffs. “I was like, ‘Why am I here?’”

A Council on American Islamic Relations representative then hustled Ahmed and his family off to talk to a lawyer.

After they left, Ahmed’s grandmother, Aisha Musa, lay on a bed in the dining room, resting her feet. She had immigrated from Sudan with the rest of the family years ago.

She doesn’t speak English or know her exact age, but her granddaughters translated her take on her grandson’s celebrity: “I want my son’s son to grow old and have a good job. I thank God there’s nothing people can say but [that] we are good people.”

Staff writers Naheed Rajwani, Julie Fancher, Todd Gillman and Robert Wilonsky contributed to this report.

Update at 10:09 a.m. Wednesday: Former secretary of state and Democratic presidential candidiate Hillary Clinton joined the tidal wave of tweets supporting Mohamed Ahmed after his arrest Monday for bringing a homemade digital clock to school.

“Assumptions and fear don’t keep us safe — they hold us back. Ahmed, stay curious and keep building,” Clinton’s tweet read.

Irving ISD officials and Irving police will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Irving Criminal Justice Center. We will continue to update this story as new developments emerge.

Update at 9:32 a.m. Wednesday: After the story of Ahmed Mohamed’s arrest for bringing a homemade digital clock to school went viral Tuesday, triggering an outpouring of support for him on social media, Ahmed tweeted a thank-you early Wednesday.

Original story by Avi Selk:

IRVING — Ahmed Mohamed — who makes his own radios and repairs his own go-kart — hoped to impress his teachers when he brought a homemade clock to MacArthur High on Monday.

Instead, the school phoned police about Ahmed’s circuit-stuffed pencil case.

So the 14-year-old missed the student council meeting and took a trip in handcuffs to juvenile detention. His clock now sits in an evidence room. Police say they may yet charge him with making a hoax bomb — though they acknowledge he told everyone who would listen that it’s a clock.

In the meantime, Ahmed’s been suspended, his father is upset and the Council on American-Islamic Relations is once again eyeing claims of Islamophobia in Irving.

Box of circuit boards

A box full of circuit boards sits at the foot of Ahmed’s small bed in central Irving. His door marks the border where the Mohamed family’s cramped but lavishly decorated house begins to look like the back room at RadioShack.

“Here in high school, none of the teachers know what I can do,” Ahmed said, fiddling with a cable while a soldering iron dangled from the shelf behind him.

He loved robotics club in middle school and was searching for a similar niche in his first few weeks of high school.

So he decided to do what he’s always done: He built something.

Ahmed’s clock was hardly his most elaborate creation. He said he threw it together in about 20 minutes before bedtime on Sunday: a circuit board and power supply wired to a digital display, all strapped inside a case with a tiger hologram on the front.

He showed it to his engineering teacher first thing Monday morning and didn’t get quite the reaction he’d hoped for.

“He was like, ‘That’s really nice,’” Ahmed said. “‘I would advise you not to show any other teachers.’”

He kept the clock inside his school bag in English class, but the teacher complained when the alarm beeped in the middle of a lesson. Ahmed brought his invention up to show her afterward.

“She was like, it looks like a bomb,” he said.

“I told her, ‘It doesn’t look like a bomb to me.’”

The teacher kept the clock. When the principal and a police officer pulled Ahmed out of sixth period, he suspected he wouldn’t get it back.

They led Ahmed into a room where four other police officers waited. He said an officer he’d never seen before leaned back in his chair and remarked: “Yup. That’s who I thought it was.”

Ahmed felt suddenly conscious of his brown skin and his name — one of the most common in the Muslim religion. But the police kept him busy with questions.

The bell rang at least twice, he said, while the officers searched his belongings and questioned his intentions. The principal threatened to expel him if he didn’t make a written statement, he said.

“They were like, ‘So you tried to make a bomb?’” Ahmed said.

“I told them no, I was trying to make a clock.”

“He said, ‘It looks like a movie bomb to me.’”

Police skepticism

Ahmed never claimed his device was anything but a clock, said police spokesman James McLellan. And police have no reason to think it was dangerous. But officers still didn’t believe Ahmed was giving them the whole story.

“We have no information that he claimed it was a bomb,” McLellan said. “He kept maintaining it was a clock, but there was no broader explanation.”

Asked what broader explanation the boy could have given, the spokesman explained:

“It could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car. The concern was, what was this thing built for? Do we take him into custody?”

Police led Ahmed out of MacArthur about 3 p.m., his hands cuffed behind him and an officer on each arm. A few students gaped in the halls. He remembers the shocked expression of his student counselor — the one “who knows I’m a good boy.”

Ahmed was spared the inside of a cell. The police sent him out of the juvenile detention center to meet his parents shortly after taking his fingerprints.

They’re still investigating the case, and Ahmed hasn’t been back to school. His family said the principal suspended him for three days.

“They thought, ‘How could someone like this build something like this unless it’s a threat?’” Ahmed said.

An Irving ISD statement gave no details about the case, citing student privacy laws. But a letter addressed to “Parents/Guardians” and signed by MacArthur Principal Dan Cummings said Irving police had “responded to a suspicious-looking item on campus” and had determined that “the item … did not pose a threat to your child’s safety.”

‘Invent good things’

“He just wants to invent good things for mankind,” said Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, who immigrated from Sudan and occasionally returns there to run for president. “But because his name is Mohamed and because of Sept. 11, I think my son got mistreated.”

Mohamed is familiar with anti-Islamic politics. He once made national headlines for debating a Florida pastor who burned a Quran.

But he wasn’t paying much attention this summer when Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne became a national celebrity in anti-Islamic circles, fueling rumors in speeches that the religious minority was plotting to usurp American laws.

However, the Council on American-Islamic Relations took note.

“This all raises a red flag for us: how Irving’s government entities are operating in the current climate,” said Alia Salem, who directs the council’s North Texas chapter and has spoken to lawyers about Ahmed’s arrest.

“We’re still investigating,” she said, “but it seems pretty egregious.”

Meanwhile, Ahmed is sitting home in his bedroom, tinkering with old gears and electrical converters, pronouncing words like “ethnicity” for what sounds like the first time.

He’s vowed never to take an invention to school again.

Israeli arms fuel atrocities in Africa

The South Sudanese army, armed and trained by Israel, is committing systematic rights abuses, according to the UN.

 Goran TomasevicReuters

Israeli weapons are fueling atrocities in South Sudan, according to a United Nations report that sheds new light on the secretive Israeli arms trade in Africa.

Authored by an investigative team assembled by the UN Security Council, the report cites photographic evidence of automatic rifles made by Israel Military Industries (IMI) being in the arsenal of South Sudan’s army and police. Known as Galil ACE, the guns have particularly been used by bodyguards of high-ranking politicians and by senior army officers.

South Sudan was granted independence in 2011 following a civil war that lasted for decades. Within days of its establishment, leading figures in the Israeli weapons industry rushed to advance their interests in the new allyagainst Iran’s influence in Sudan.

Since its secession in 2011, South Sudan has descended into civil war between opposing political factions.

The Israeli-armed South Sudanese military and government-aligned militias are employing a “scorched earth policy” characterized by the systematic rape of women and children, indiscriminate killings and the burning down of entire villages with families inside their homes, according to the UN report.

South Sudan is not the only African country in which the Israeli arms industry is profiting from bloodshed.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Israel does not disclose detailed information about its arms deals, most of which are brokered by shady intermediaries, typically retired Israeli military personnel or civilian expatriates.

However, occasional news reports, public statements from officials and investigations by nongovernmental organizations have drawn back the curtain in recent years, revealing military involvement in more corners ofAfrica than can be detailed in a single article.

Using those sources, SIPRI was able to document the sale of major Israeli weapons to Cameroon, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, the Seychelles, South Africa and Uganda from 2006 to 2010.

Champion arms dealer

Despite its small size, for decades Israel has ranked among the world’s top 10 arms exporters, an impressive feat for a nation no geographically bigger than New Jersey.

This is partly due to Israel’s use of the occupied West Bank and Gaza as laboratories to test and refine weapons and methods of domination and control. This dynamic allows Israeli military firms to market their products as “battle-tested” and “combat proven” — coveted labels that give the nation a competitive edge in the international arms trade.

Israel’s success is also attributable to its willingness to do business with repressive regimes that even the United States and European countries avoid arming directly.

In the case of South Sudan, the magnitude of atrocities compelled the European Union to impose an arms embargo and issue sanctions against the country’s military leaders.

The US has similarly suspended military aid and issued sanctions, though it should be noted that the Obama administration enthusiastically aided the build-up of the South Sudanese army, despite knowing that it had several thousand child soldiers within its ranks.

Israel, meanwhile, hosted South Sudan at a weapons expo as recently as June.

Aiding genocide

Acting as a weapons conduit to murderous regimes is hardly a new phenomenon for Israel.

Under the leadership of Yitzhak Rabin, then prime minister, and Shimon Peres, then foreign minister, Israelsupplied the Hutu-dominated Rwandan government forces as well as the rebel army led by Paul Kagame with bullets, rifles and grenades as genocide was underway in that country during the 1990s.

In addition to arming the killers, Israel trained the Rwandan military and paramilitary forces in the years leading up to the bloodbath.

After touring the killing fields, an Israeli arms dealer reportedly lauded himself as a humanitarian for helping the victims die quickly with bullets instead of machetes. “I’m actually a doctor,” he remarked.

Israel has since forged close ties with Kagame, Rwanda’s current autocratic president who enjoys much support in the West.

Weapons depot for despots

As Israeli weapons contracts from the US and Europe decline due to reduced defense budgets, developing countries in Latin America and Africa have become Israel’s fastest-growing markets.

Israeli arms sales to Africa doubled between 2012 and 2013 and ballooned another 40 percent in 2014, reaching $318 million that year.

It’s unclear whether these totals account for the weapons and military training Israel provided to Uganda and possibly Rwanda as compensation for agreeing to take in African refugees expelled from Israel.

While Israel has no qualms contributing to turmoil in African countries, it refuses to grant asylum to Africans on its soil, preferring instead to imprison and deport them back to the horrors they escaped. Some have beenimprisoned, tortured and even killed since their expulsion.

What is clear is that Israel’s African customers comprise a who’s who of undemocratic regimes that brutally oppress their citizens.

Cameroon’s Rapid Intervention Brigade (BIR), which engages in routine extrajudicial assassinations and “disappearances”, is trained by a retired Israeli army commander, Mayer Heretz.

In 2009, BIR was deployed to crush demonstrations against economic inequality, killing as many as 100 protesters.

Cameroon’s notoriously brutal presidential guard unit, which is vital to maintaining the 33-year rule of dictatorPaul Biya, was trained by another retired Israeli army commander, Avi Sivan.

Prolonging the rule of repressive regimes in Africa is a long-held Israeli tradition.

Israel equipped the South African apartheid regime with weapons in the 1970s and ’80s in violation of international sanctions.

Safeguarding corporate plunder

Decades of stealing and colonizing Palestinian land and resources has qualified Israel with unique expertise in subduing resistance and maintaining colonial plunder.

As Jimmy Johnson, an activist and researcher on Israel’s arms trade, has explained, “The 19th century ethnocentric nationalism that drove the creation of Israel … often obscures the fact that the dispossession of Palestinians has included a massive upward transfer of wealth from colonized to colonizer and from occupied to occupier.”

Israel isn’t just delivering arms to Africa. It is offering a successful model for securing the spoils of neocolonialism from a growing underclass dispossessed and abandoned by the ravages of globalized capitalism.

Israel’s occupation is “exported to fight the redistribution of wealth,” as Johnson has noted.

Just south of Cameroon, Israeli military companies have raked in millions of dollars selling military hardware to the tiny oil-rich nation of Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinea is home to one of the most unequal societies in the world.

The former Spanish colony’s ruthless dictator, Teodoro Obiang, has enriched himself with handsome paymentsfrom US oil companies, which in turn exploit the country’s massive oil reserves without hindrance.

To preserve his rule, Obiang depends on a presidential guard almost certainly trained by Israel, while relying on Israeli hardware perfected in Gaza to protect Exxon’s oil rigs.

Obiang’s security forces are notorious for carrying out widespread torture and summary executions of political opponents.

In 2008, Israel secured an estimated $100 million weapons deal with Equatorial Guinea, which involved the purchase of four IMI Shaldag patrol boats and a Saar missile boat manufactured by Israel Shipyards. “IMI’s boats are intended to secure the oil rigs at sea,” according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

These are the same vessels used by the Israeli navy to enforce the sea blockade of Gaza and fire on its inhabitants.

While Israel helps US oil companies and the Obiang family cash in, 1 in 10 children in Equatorial Guinea diesbefore his or her fifth birthday. Moreover, less than half the country’s citizens have access to clean drinking water.

In Angola’s Cabinda province, Aerostar, a drone made by the Israeli company Aeronautics Defense Systems, safeguards offshore oil rigs for private companies, including Chevron.

In the Niger Delta, an assortment of Israeli surveillance vehicles, including the Aerostar and Seastar from Aeronautics and the Shaldag patrol boat from Israel Shipyards, protect Chevron’s oil platforms from potential obstacles to the corporate pillaging of Nigeria’s resources.

This is in addition to Nigeria’s Internet surveillance system, installed by Israel’s largest military firm, Elbit Systems, in 2013.

Exporting “war on terror”

With the rise of Boko Haram, Nigeria has in recent years adopted the “war on terror” doctrine first pushed by Israel to justify its ongoing conquest of Palestine.

“Israel has been a crucial and loyal ally in our fight against Boko Haram,” a Nigerian government official wasquoted as saying early this year.

“It is a sad reality that Israel has a great deal of experience confronting terrorism. Our Israeli partners have used that experience, and the unique expertise gained over years of fighting terror within its own borders, to assist us,” added the official, conflating Palestinian resistance to Israeli colonial violence with terrorism perpetrated by a militant group to which Palestinians have no relation.

Fully supportive of his government’s conduct, one Nigerian Christian activist told The Jerusalem Post, “I am like an Israeli settler in the West Bank in the midst of Palestinians.”

This attitude has been nothing short of disastrous.

Since 2012, under the cover of routing Boko Haram, the Nigerian military has extrajudicially executed 1,200 people and arbitrarily arrested 20,000 boys and young men, at least 7,000 of whom died in military detention from starvation, medical neglect and overcrowding.

Kenyan death squads in the General Service Unit, the paramilitary wing of that country’s police and military, have similarly adopted the “Israeli rulebook” for extrajudicial killings of outspoken Muslim clerics.

Death squad officers interviewed by Al Jazeera last year revealed that their units are trained by Israel.

“Exporting the experience of Zionism”

In his 1987 book The Israeli Connection, Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi characterized Israel’s support for tyrants in developing countries as “a direct outgrowth of what it has done at home.”

“What Israel is doing in the Third World,” asserted Beit-Hallahmi, “is simply to export the Middle East experience of Zionism,” characterized by conquest and pacification.

Israel is exporting “not just a technology of domination, but a worldview that undergirds that technology,” he added.

It is exporting “the logic of the oppressor … a certain frame of mind, a feeling that the Third World can be controlled and dominated, that radical movements in the Third World can be stopped, that modern Crusaders still have a future.”

This is precisely what Israel is doing in Africa today, with predictably deadly consequences.

Charlie Hebdo Mocks the Death of Syrian Kid Aylan Kurdi

“Christians Walk on Waters… Muslim Kids Sink”, Charlie Hebdo Mocked the Death of Syrian Kid Aylan Kurdi

On the morning of January 7, 2015, two brothers entered the office of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical magazine and opened fire on the people. The world mourned the death of those 12 people who lost their life fighting their right to expression.

Worldwide people came out in their support and everyone became Charlie Hebdo with ‘Je Suis Charlie Hebdo.’

We supported their right to express and felt that the extremely violent move against them was uncalled for. In their next edition, they sold 1 million copies.

However, this time, Charlie Hebdo went way too far and hurt everyone’s emotions. They mocked the death of the Syrian kid migrant Aylan Kurdi, the news of which had left the world shaken.

What did they do?

They featured a front page cartoon of the three-year-old Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi with McDonalds in the background. The line read ‘Two Menus Of Children For The Price Of One’.

Their second edition featured another cartoon with a drowned kid next to Jesus Christ standing on water. The caption read, “Christians walk on waters… Muslim kids sink.” The title of the cartoon was ‘The Proof that Europe is Christian.’

What’s funny in that?

Nothing. What’s satirical in that? Nothing. Maybe the humour is lost in translation, but I don’t think the unfortunate death of an innocent kid can be humorous in any language, culture or religion.

It is satirical, not meant to be taken offence in. However, this is going too far. The Syrian crisis is affecting more people than we can imagine, there are people without houses who struggle to keep their families safe and alive. Right now is not the time to mock a catastrophe.

It will never be a good time to mock a catastrophe.

Not fair, Charlie Hebdo. This time we aren’t on your side.

Prince Saud also said that “We need to help the Syrian people by halting the bloodshed, and not by merely condemning the violence. But we need to help them by all legal means possible against aggression that will almost make Syrians extinct.”

Regarding the prospect of a military strike, Prince Saud stated, “We stand by the will of the Syrian people. They know their best interests, so whatever they accept, we accept and whatever they refuse, we refuse.”

The United Nations General Assembly has passed a draft resolution, submitted by the Kingdom on behalf of 66 member countries, calling for the enhancement and protection of human rights in Syria and the cessation of the killings and atrocities being committed by the Damascus government. As many as 123 states voted for resolution No. A/C.3/68/L.42LRev.1, while 46 states abstained and 13 opposed.

Wednesday’s vote was preceded by a thorough debate on the state of human rights in Syria. Presenting the draft resolution, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdullah bin Yahya Al-Maalami, expressed sorrow over the killings and abuses being carried out against the Syrian people with conventional and chemical weapons. He reiterated the Kingdom’s disappointment with the international community for its failure to take effective action to end the crisis. Al-Maalami warned that every day the amount of killing, torture, imprisonment, oppression, abductions and rape against Syrian civilians increases, while the Syrian regime uses foreign militias to carry out massacres.

Citing UN reports, he pointed out that more than 100,000 people have been killed, around 9 million have been displaced, nearly half of the Syrian population is in dire need of food aid, polio and epidemic hepatitis are on the rise, and nearly 2.5 million people are being besieged inside Syria. While welcoming international efforts to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons, Al-Maalami denounced as shameful the world’s inaction in the face of these horrific human rights violations.

Saudi Arabia Increases Aid for Syrian People

January 15, 2014

(Washington, DC) — Today, Saudi Minister of Finance Dr. Ibrahim Al-Assaf announced that Saudi Arabia has increased its financial assistance for the Syrian people by $60 million, bringing the total for disbursement during the coming period to $250 million. Al-Assaf made the announcement while addressing the Second International Humanitarian Pledging Conference on Syria held in Kuwait.
Al-Assaf, who led the Kingdom’s delegation to the conference, reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the Syrian people. He stated, “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is keen to provide support for the Syrian refugees with aid totaling $448 million, about $260 millionof which has already been paid in collaboration with a number of institutions working in the relief field for the Syrian people.”

On January 22, 2014 Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal said in an Official Statement:

“We realized that the most important content of this announcement is the formation of a transitional government with full powers in order to manage the state’s affairs from political, security and military aspects. Bashar Al-Assad or any of his regime’s symbols whose hands are stained with blood of Syrians will have no current or future role in this arrangement.

To get Syria out of this dark tunnel, our start to the desired solution should be based on the following elements: first, immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces and armed elements of the Syrian territories, including the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Forces and the Hezbollah militia; second, end the fighting and lift the siege on the Syrian cities and villages, including air strikes and artillery implemented by the regime; third, find safe areas and corridors for the delivery of aid to the Syrians under international supervision; fourth, release prisoners and detainees held by the Syrian regime. It is time to stop the bloodshed and end the suffering of the Syrian people. It is a favorable opportunity for us not to let down the Syrians again.”

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued the following statement:

The Royal Saudi Air Force today participated in military operations over Syria to confront terrorism emanating from Daash (ISIS) and to support the moderate Syrian opposition as part of an international coalition to defeat terrorism, which is a deadly evil afflicting the world, and to support the fraternal Syrian people to restore security, unity and to rebuild their suffering nation.

September 25, 2014 Prince Saud said in an Official Statement:

while a political settlement based on the Geneva Declaration is needed to end the conflict, the Kingdom is convinced that the regime of Bashar Al-Assad won’t accept to sit down at the negotiating table unless the change of scales on the ground is in favor of the moderate forces. “In this sense, our support for the moderate Syrian opposition forces should not be limited to military support to counter terrorist groups in Syrian territory, but should include practical steps to weaken the Syrian regime by tightening the economic blockade, begin to pursue its symbols through the mechanisms of international justice for their crimes committed against the Syrian people, enhance its political isolation and encourage defections in the ranks of the civilian and military personnel from within the regime.”

Prince Saud concluded that the regime of Bashar Al-Assad has lost its legitimacy due to its inhuman practices and policies that have created a fertile environment for terrorism, and; therefore, a solution to this dilemma will not be found, except through its departure from the political scene with those whose hands are tarnished with the blood of the Syrians.”

The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia welcomed thousands of Syrian Refugees into Saudi for residential stay without any stipulations, confines or Visa, and covered all their expenses and offered them shielding and sheltering

The Syrian Refugees were to choose from either 2 options:

1- That a Saudi citizen appoints the Syrian refugee and allows him to travel in Saudi Arabia, wherever he wills, for a certain period, that is continually extended (like the one carrying a visitors Visa),
2- That the Syrian Refugees chooses to be transferred to a large hotel in the city of Samtha (a town and sub-division in Jizan Province, in southwestern Saudi Arabia), where a flat is distributed for each Syrian family, and the government of Saudi Arabia covers his full food, drink, and clothing expenses. Saudi funds 129 Million Riyaal ($34,399,542) for Relief projects for the displaced Syrians.
Information the reader must understand:
Saudi Arabia’s population stood at 30.8 million at the end of 2014, a 2.6 percent rise from 2013, according to data released by the Kingdom’s Central Department of Statistics and Information (CDSI).
There were 20.7 million Saudis, making up 67 percent of the population, while the number of foreigners stood at 10.1 million or 33 percent, according to an analysis conducted by the economics reporting unit of Al-Eqtisadiah.
The population had grown by 2.7 percent from 2012 to 2013, amounting to 29.2 million people. This consisted of 20.3 million Saudis and 9.7 million foreigners.
The CDSI said that the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stood at SR2.82 trillion at the end of 2014, while per capita GDP was SR91,700.
Per capita GDP had grown by 9 percent over the past 11 years, an annual increase of SR4,900.
The highest per capita GDP growth was between 2004 and 2005, when it grew by 23 percent, or from SR43,000 to SR52,800.
According to the analysis, per capita GDP dropped 19 percent between 2008 and 2009, from SR87,600 to SR63,400, as a result of the global financial crisis.
The number of foreigners in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia amounts to more than 10 million, representing one-third of the population of whom are 600,000 Syrian’s ! 800,000 Yemenis ! 120,000 Palestinians! 500,000 Bangladeshi! 500,000 Filipino! 30,000 Somalians ! 20,000 Afghan’s ! 20,000Nepalis !  230,000 Sudanis ! and 30,000 from South Sudan ! 30,000 Ethiopians ! 40,000 Eritreans ! 10,000 Nigerians ! and others, as for the Indian, Egyptian , Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Yemeni nationalities are the most common in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Note that the majority of these foreigners are expatriates meaning that THEY ARE NOT BORN IN SAUDI ! 500,000 out of the 600,000 Syrians and 460,000 or more out of the 800,000 Yemenis residing in Saudi are expatriates and refugees

Mohammed Alyahya ( Associate Fellow At the Saudi Arabian King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, and Strategic Affairs at Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia at London Coordinator – Office of the Ambassador ) said in a recent interview with BBC News hour with Lyse Doucet on Sept, 5 2015:

“Zero is a very inaccurate number because Saudi Arabia doesn’t have a refugee policy. There are 500,000 Syrians in Saudi Arabia that have been given visas, 3000 of which, based on a recent royal decree, have been given scholarships to attend university inside the kingdom. They are also given healthcare for themselves and their families but they are called visitors, they are not called refugees. Many of them are there to visit their families, who already live in Saudi Arabia. I can’t speak to other Gulf countries but the number in Saudi Arabia is 500,000. … This week we have seen a lot of focus on the refugee crisis after there was a spike in the number of refugees coming into Europe and after we saw these heart-breaking photographs of drowned civilian children and civilians but the refugee crisis has been going on for 4 years. It’s as if people have forgotten Syria until that one picture of the child surfaced … Whole families have come in and they have been given visas and their statuses have been formalised in Saudi Arabia. Just the fact that they’re not called refugees doesn’t mean that they aren’t refugees. Putting the number at zero is extremely misleading. It just ignores the fact that there are 500,000 Syrians in Saudi Arabia as a result of this war that WEREN’T in Saudi Arabia before it.” (End quote) [You can listen to the Interview in the sources at the end of my note]

Jeddah, Dhu-AlQa’dah 27, 1436, Sep 11, 2015, SPA — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not intend to speak about its efforts to support Syrian brothers and sisters, during their distress, according to a statement by an official of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since the beginning of the problem, he added, Saudi Arabia has dealt with the situation from a religious and humane perspective, and did not wish to boast about its efforts or attempt to gain media coverage.
However, media reports have contained erroneous and misleading information, and the Kingdom now considers it important to discuss its efforts with appropriate facts and figures, he pointed.
The official souce explained that the following actions have been taken by the Kingdom:
1.The Kingdom has received around 2.5 million Syrians since the beginning of the conflict. In order to ensure their dignity and safety, the Kingdom adopted a policy that does not treat them as refugees or place them in refugee camps. They have been given the freedom to move about the country and those who wish to remain in Saudi Arabia (some hundreds of thousands) have been given legal residency status “like the remaining residents.” Their residency comes with the rights to receive free medical care, to join the labor market and to attend schools and universities. This was contained in a royal decree in 2012 that instructed public schools to accept Syrian students. According to government statistics, the public school system has accepted more than 100,000 Syrian students.

Immigrants in Saudi make up more than 30% of the total population, according to UN data (2013) (July 2015 est.)
Hundreds of thousands of immigrants from all Islamic countries and others have always been welcomed, whether to ask for a livelihood or to seek knowledge or request asylum or security, and so on. Therefore, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a significant burden that can not be borne alone manned with this number of migrants. Therefore it creates, provides, and funds refugee camps in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and elsewhere for Syrians and others, and as you have seen in my research here the enormous amount of aid and finances that the Saudi government has provided for (Syrian refugees only) which has exceeded billions of dollars let aside all the other nationalities including Yemeni refugees and others that the kingdom is funding and providing housings, camps, and aid for.
In addition to all this information I provided in my research that the majority of the people don’t know about whether its the ignoramus haters on the kingdom or the non haters is that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the 16th of March 2015 Saudi has entitled Four million (4,000,000) Burmese residents to obtain “Iqamaah” in Saudi and back in 23rd of March 2013 Prince Khaled Al-Faisal distributed free residency permits (iqamas) to the Burmese community and legalized the status of nearly 500,000 Burmese refugees ! The Saudi government provided Burmese with health care, social services, education and develop their residential areas as part of a comprehensive program. They also train them to get jobs. Also King Abdullah ordered the formation of a ministerial committee for the development of disorganized residential districts in Makkah to improve the situation of Burmese Muslims living in those districts.
So in fact Saudi already has welcomed hundreds of thousands of Syrians, Burmese, Yemnis and others also Saudi tries to decrease extending the visits in order for them to give a chance for other people to make ‘umra although they are not implementing this on Syrians !
Al-Luaydaan (Official speaker of the General Department of Passports) said: The extension of visits will be stopped starting from the end of next month Sha’ban except for Syrians living in the kingdom on a visit visa. One of the main reasions on the decision to stop the extension of the arrivals visits, is to provide an opportunity for others who want to make Umrah.
The Saudi Government has also decided Not to deport any Syrian citizen resident on its territory even if his residence permit has expired. The King gave orders not to deport Syrians or trouble them with legal accountabilities or irregularities because of the situation in Syria. This procedure applied to every Syrian in Saudi Arabia.
The reader must also understand that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the countries around the world with the most enemies, and is being planned against from various enemies from the kufar and deviant Muslims, So they try hardly to ruin the Kingdom’s picture in front of the people, and always try to infiltrate Saudi in order to fulfill their schemes,
Saudi Enemies mainly fall under these divisions
1- The Zionists and Crusaders from the Jews & Christians
2- Shi’aa Rafida
3- Khawarij Takfiri Tafjiri Extremists and Terrorists
4- Sufis and Grave worshippers
5- Ahbaash
Therefore it is always feared that anything might happen in Saudi especially that Syria has many Nusayri ‘Alawi Shi’aa and Yemen has many Houthie Shi’aa, while the shiaa carry very dangerous extremist Aqeedah towards Saudi,
  • The Cursed Imaam of Shi’aa Al-Khumayni said: The Islamic and non-Islamic world will not recognize our power until we control Mecca and Medina.
  • Khumayni also says: When I conquer and enter Mecca and Medina, the first wajib upon me is to bring out (Al-Sanamayn) the two idols Abu Bakr and Umar from their graves -waleyazu bellah !-
  • Former President of Iran Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said in Itila’aat in 1987  : The Islamic Republic of Iran has the readiness of the war for the liberation of this sacred place (Al-Haramein). “
  • Iranian Grand Ayatollah Hossein Khorasani says in his book [Al-Islam fi Daw’ul Tashayu’u] : Every single Shiite upon the earth wishes to open and liberate Mecca and Medina and remove the Wahhabi’s from ruler-ship
  • It was narrated from Abu Jaafar said: The Mahdi of the Shi’aa will demolish the house (Ka’aba) he will not leave any of it except the bases. (Al-Raj’aa p.254)

  • Majlisi narrated from Abu Abdullah, he said: When the qa’em (Mahdi) comes out there will be nothing between him and the Arabs except for the sword (Bihaar Al-Anwaar 52/355)
  • Abu Abdullah peace and blessings be upon him said: Do you know the first thing the Mahdi would do was
    I said no
he said: He wil bring out these two (Abu Bakr and Umar) and burn them and throw their ashes to the wind, and he will destroy the masjid (Masjid al-Ḥarām)  [Al-Anwaar Al-Mude’aa, Bahaa ul-Deen an-Najjafi, p. 339] [Bihaar al-Anwaar, Majlisi, 52/386] (This is a Sahih Hadith according to the filthy Shi’aa)
So this is how dangerous the Shiaa Rawafid are and anyone who has a glimpse of background on Saudi history they will know the many attempts of the shiaa to attack Makkah and Madina and the Ka’baa as well as the takfiri Khawarij even though that Khawarij do not wish to demolish the Ka’ba itself as the Shi’aa but they waged war against Saudi, made many attacks, suicide bombings, consider the Saudi government and its citizens apostates and desire to take over the rule in Saudi. Many incidents have happened and one of the famous ones was Juhayman al-‘Utaybi incident when he hijacked the Ka’ba for two weeks and held the hujaaj hostages under the gun.
After this lengthy detailed research its pretty clear how much the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has aided the Syrian Refugees based on this what I provided from SUMMARIZED aid and financing it proves that their aid and finances when calculated is more than what all other countries from Islamic and non-Islamic have done all together ! So dont be fooled by the (Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon etc syrian refugee camps and that they let them in because the reality is that Saudi is the one covering the majority of the expenses of these camps, and they are the ones who actually built most of them, these refugee camps in those countries and Zaatari refugee camp etc. live off KSA money and aid ! so be aware of that. Stop being and ignorant hypocrite criticizing when you have no knowledge of the reality behind certain situations, you people speak as if you have thousands of Syrian refugees in your houses and finance them ! when you aid Syrian Refugees with more than 12-15 billion dollars as Saudi has or at least aid them with a QUARTER OF WHAT SAUDI HAS AIDED then open your mouth otherwise keep it shut and implement the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh): He who believes in Allah and the Last Day must either speak good or remain silent.”
Most of you speak like hypocrites waleyazu bellah taking sides with the kufar and claiming that they have done good for the Syrian refugees ! The disbelieving governments mostly do this out of political, foreign, and public interest not for the love of the Syrian Muslims as Saudi does, and the aid of those non-muslims is 1% compared to what Saudi has aided for Syrians and others.
Allah aza wajjal says: [Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) nor Al-Mushrikun (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, idolaters, polytheists, pagans, etc.) wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.]
So be thankful to Saudi instead of criticizing out of ignorance !
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah. [Sunan Abi Dawud 4811, Sahih Aljami 1926]

Russian 9/11 Data Dump Reveals State Actors

by Michael Thomas

State of the Nation

“9/11 was an Anglo-American black operation executed in collusion with Israeli Secret Services and Saudi Arabian financiers.” — 9/11 Investigator

Undoubtedly the 9/11 attacks on New York City and Washington DC are the most misrepresented by officialdom in US history.

Whereas the assassination of John F. Kennedy is now understood to have been a classic CIA Execution Plan, it does not come close to 9/11 in terms of the number and magnitude of outright falsehoods, misleading statements, fake science and fraudulent facts submitted by officials and agents of the US Government.  The ‘official’ 9/11 Commission Report stands as the most fabricated document ever produced by US tax dollars.  Not only did the investigation avoid every serious inquiry about how two steel frame building came down after being dustified in NYC, it also subverted every initiative to ferret out the truth.

That’s all about to change in 2014.

It appears that Russia has been conducting systematic data dumps on 9/11, the release of which represents more factual information on the attacks than any US Government source.  In the wake of the Anglo-American coup d’état conducted by the CIA and MI6 in Kiev, it appears that Russia has no more patience for Western interference.  Especially when nations are destabilized on Russia’s borders do the stakes in this highly consequential geopolitical chess match go up.

Since Vladimir Putin has no intention of starting World War 3, he can only respond to US-EU meddling by using asymmetric warfare on the internet.  Were the American people to understand that the US Federal Government perpetrated the 9/11 destruction, everything would change in a heartbeat.  Because the Obama Administration has shown no sign of aborting its planned takeover of the Ukraine, Russia is left with very few, but still quite potent options.

The following excerpt recently appeared on an alternative news website — Veterans Today — under the subtitle “Too Classified to Publish”.  Essentially this unprecedented release of ultra-secret and highly classified information illustrates Putin’s new tack toward Western intractability.  Simply put, Russia will no longer stand by idly while the Anglo-American Juggernaut projects it power wherever it so chooses.

Too Classified to Publish

According to a retired FXX agent specializing in Israeli counter intel: The type of nuclear devices used on 911 were a modified version of the W-54 nuclear artillery shells that were covertly provided to the Israelis between 1988 and 1998 from US surplus stockpiles illegally exported during the Bush/Clinton era.

Chemical analysis done by DOE Sandi was able to identify the chemical/radiation footprint or fingerprint of the warheads based on samples taken after 911 of the fallout at ground zero. (Editor’s note: Nuclear weapon use at ground zero is confirmed from multiple sources)

All plutonium based warheads have a chemical fingerprint that can identify the type of design and where the PU was made and how old it is. This was the 911 blackmail on Bush 1 and 2, the illegal transfer of surplus US nuclear weapons to the Israelis and why the continued cover up, along with the stolen gold and stock fraud that was going on Wall Street etc. According to file ENW57.pdf on page 66. (Editor’s note: Document received and confirmed)

Only a 2 kiloton device was needed to drop the buildings. A 2 kiloton device will produce a fireball of apx 150 to 200 feet in diameter at over 4000 degrees Centigrade. Just large enough to melt the I beams of the central core of the building and drop them in place. The light flash would last less than 1 second and primarily be in the UV light range. Overpressure would only be at 60PSI max and directed upwards with the blast. See underground effect.

Fallout would be minimal and located to within ground zero range only. Radiation would drop to acceptable levels within 72 hrs. after the blast. Most fall out was trapped in the cement dust thus causing all of the recent cancer deaths that we are now seeing in NYC amongst first responders. (Editor’s note: Consistent with site data)

High FluxIsotope Reactor Core - Cross Section

High FluxIsotope Reactor Core – Cross Section

Melted steel and iron oxide or “nano thermite” is a byproduct of the very high gamma ray / Neutron flux induced into the central steel core. The radiation dissolves the steel into iron oxide consuming the carbon and silicone in the steel.

This explains the missing steel columns and the very important clue of the “vaporized’ 20 ton antenna tower atop the south tower. The upward blast of radiation literally vaporized it. Video evidence proves this to be true. (Editor’s note: Tower issue a vital one.)

The total XXOO data file from DOE Sandia on the 911 event is well over 72 MB. P.S. Snowden didn’t have a Q clearance so he missed this one. Carnaberry had a pretty good stash of documents on the subject. (All under the transit stuff.) The entire nuclear nonproliferation story of stolen nuclear material coming from Russia was an Israeli cover story to hide the original source of weapons material coming from the US stock piles. (Editor’s note: Fully confirmed)

Illegal distribution of US nuclear material to foreign allies was not limited to Israel. Virtually all NATO allies were in on this scam too. Dick Cheney was the bad guy on this one. Bush2/Cheney traded nuclear pits to foreign country as IOU’s in order to get what they wanted. Tom Countryman a well-known Israeli operative is curiously now in charge of N.N.P. at the State Department under Obama.(?) He was put there by Ram Emanuel.

Early Israeli core model - Vannunu photo

Early Israeli core model – Vannunu photo

It appears that the weapon of choice for the Israelis were the W-54 and follow on series of nuclear pits taken from the Amarillo TX storage dump. This was what Carnaberry was working on for Bush senior in Houston.

A total of over 350 pits were transferred to the Israelis over a 10 to 20 year period of time. The W-54 type of pit design were the most desirable due to the 2 point implosion pit design. This is the easiest to re manufacture and modify as compared to other circular pit designs.

The pill shaped design of the W-54 type weapon contains over 1.5 times more plutonium than a standard pit. This would allow enough Plutonium to be recovered that was still of weapons grade use even after 32 plus years of age. Americium build up in the pit over time eventually makes the Pit unusable as a weapon so they have a limited shelf life based on how fast or slow the Plutonium was produce in the reactor at Stanford.

Usually it was about 150 days max. Irradiation time in the reactor during production determines the shelf life of the pit as weapons grade material. All of the micro nukes used by the Israelis are re-manufactured W-54 type series devices.

Khazelov confirmed this a micro nuke bombing

Khazelov confirmed this a micro nuke bombing

These devices were used in the Bali bombing and the London bombing and in Japan on their reactors. (Editor’s note: Nuclear weapon use in Bali confirmed) Also used in Damascus, Iraq and Afghanistan by the US. (Editor’s note: Multiple confirmation including site samples.)

These are stored in most Israelite embassies for ease of deployment. The one’s used on 911 were kept at the Israeli consulate in NYC until put in place. After 911 the FBI now checks all diplomatic pouches with a Geiger counter before entering or leaving the US. The South African weapons were also surplus W-54 artillery shells acquired from Israeli and final assembly and testing was done in South Africa with Israel assistance. (Editor’s note: This explains Pelendaba production issues.)

This was done because the Israelis needed a testing ground in order to make sure that there rebuilt weapons would work as designed. (Editor’s note: Testing on Sept. 22, 1979 multiple confirmations.) The North Korean weapons are also of the 155 mm artillery design as provided by Israel.

The true North Korean nuclear weapons program is based on nuclear artillery use and not missiles. The plan is to use a massive artillery barge on South Korea if war breaks out this include the use of small nuclear artillery shells to counter US tanks rockets and artillery.

The Saudi’s also have a stash of W-54′s acquired from the US under Bush2. (Editor’s note: Confirmed) The Israelis have also provided them to India, Brazil, China, Taiwan, Japan, North and South Korea etc. (Editor’s note: All but South Korea confirmed. Canada had been believed to be the source of Brazilian nuclear weapons.) Dimona is a standard 75 megawatt thermal open top reactor as used in France for their plutonium weapons production program, their version of Stanford (Editor’s note:  Probably “Hanford”).

Dimona - Israel

Dimona – Israel

Due to over use as a fast breeder reactor by the Israelis, Dimona suffered a “steam explosion” IE a flash over indecent due to neutron criticality back in the late 1980′s under Bush 1. This shut down its operation for many years until repairs could be made.

It know only operates at very low power levels due to neutron absorption damage to the containment vessel. Now mainly use for isotope production. This forced the Israelis to turn to stolen nuclear stock piles from the US for the continuation of their nuclear program.

The Israelis knowing that the nuclear material that they had acquire only had a limited shelf life left before it was no longer usable as weapons grade then tried to dump it on the surplus market as fast as possible before it was of no use to them. So they dumped it on unsuspecting nations who would only sit on it and not be able to test it. These were the fissile tests in North Korea. (Editor’s note: Confirmed, multiple sources)

When everybody caught on to the scam such as Japan and Korea. (IE the Korean sub sinkings etc) they were angry because they paid big bucks for junk. This started a mini cold war with Israel and her old clients. However with micro nukes even as the plutonium ages it will still fissile producing a smaller size detonation well under 2 kiloton in size.

So they can still be used as small dirty bombs or as very small tactical nukes such as the nuclear artillery strikes on Damascus with rocket assisted W-54′s. (Editor’s note: Confirmed strike, May 4, 2013) On the W-54 pit design it is pill shaped and it is only about 4 inches in diameter and weighs about 24 pounds.

Most of the fuel is consumed in the plasma fire ball when detonated so there is very little plutonium fallout left to escape. If it is salted with other materials the fallout can be even reduced to lower levels such as in an enhanced radiation device or the so called neutron bomb. This is what was used on 911.

Falling man – 911

The primary purpose of the nuclear weapon used on 911 was to produce a massive Gamma ray / neutron flux that would vaporize about 150 to 300 feet of 6 inch thick steal I-beams that constituted the central core of the WTC buildings. This created a free fall event as seen on TV that day. (Editor’s note: Critical information here.)

The flash would be hidden from sight due to the underground detonation. Most of the light was in the non-visible light spectrum any way. Over pressure would be reduced to 6 psi due to the blast traveling up the central core and neutron radiation vaporizing the TV antenna at the top of the building as see on TV.

The fallout would be mainly vaporized concrete cement and iron oxide. This is why after 911 they told everyone on TV that the beta radiation burns that people were getting were due to the caustic cement dust and not due to the radiation effects from the radioactive cement fallout. (Editor’s note: Fully confirmed)

The iron oxide found all over the place was what was left of the steel I beams. This was the so called Nano Thermite that was found everywhere. Fallout was limited to a 1 mile area around down town NYC. See charts. (Editor’s note: Received)

Radiation decay was reduced to safe low levels after 72 hrs., (Editor’s note: Fully confirmed) outside of ground zero its self. This is why the area was blocked off from the public for 3 days after the event, in order to let the radiation drop to safe levels.[1]

If you read this excerpt closely,  you can clearly see that Russia means business.  It is what they did not say — directly — that makes this data-dump so poignant … and dangerous to the Anglo-American power structure.

US man accused of 9/11 memorial bomb plot

A 20-year-old whose online identity was ‘Australi Witness’ – an ISIS agent apparently living in Perth – has been arrested at his parents’ place in Florida over plotting a bomb attack at a 9/11 memorial event.

A young Jewish American man has been charged with pretending to be an Australian-based Islamic State jihadist after a FBI joint investigation with the Australian Federal Police based on information provided by Fairfax Media.

Joshua Ryne Goldberg, a 20-year old living at his parents’ house in US state of Florida, is accused of posing online as “Australi Witness,” an IS supporter who publicly called for a series of attacks against individuals and events in western countries.

In recent days Australi Witness has claimed online that he is working with other jihadists to plan attacks in Australia and the United States. He distributed pictures of a bomb that he was working on with “2 lbs of explosives inside”.

A device which appears to resemble a 'pressure cooker bomb', similar to the type of explosive used in the Boston Marathon Bombings.

The device appears to resemble a “pressure cooker bomb”, similar to the type of explosive used in the Boston Marathon attack.

Early on Friday, Australian time, Goldberg, who is non-Muslim and has no real-world links with extremism, was arrested at his home by Florida police for “distribution of information relating to explosives, destructive devices, and weapons of mass destruction”.

Australian national security and citizenship laws were strengthened last year to create a new offence of advocating terrorism, partly to stop online recruitment of jihadists, and Prime Minister Tony Abbott earlier this year allocated significant funding to security agencies because “too many Australians are being brainwashed online by this death cult”.

However, one of those apparent representatives of Islamic State has now been revealed as an America-based, non-Muslim online hoaxer.

The Australian Federal Police do not intend to apply for Goldberg’s extradition, but said in a statement that he faced a 20-year prison term if convicted.

“Investigations by the AFP in June 2015 established no initial threat to the Australian community. When investigations determined it was likely the person responsible for these threats was based in the United States, the investigation became the jurisdiction of the FBI, with the AFP in a support role.”

AFP Acting Deputy Commissioner National Security Neil Gaughan alleged Goldberg had “relied on the internet providing a cloak of anonymity”.

“This operation again highlights how law enforcement can investigate people in the online space and use our long-established partnerships to work with overseas agencies to bring people to account for their actions”.

An affidavit sworn at the time of the arrest says that, between August 19 and August 28, Mr Goldberg “distributed information pertaining to the manufacturing of explosives, destructive devices, or weapons of mass destruction in furtherance of an activity that constitutes a Federal crime of violence”.

US Attorney Lee Bentley III, said Goldberg instructed a confidential source how to make a bomb similar to two used in the Boston Marathon bombings two years ago that killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

He allegedly instructed someone how to fill the bomb with nails, metal and other items dipped in rat poison.

Police base the charge on his communication of five web links to sites that provided instructions that could be used to make explosives as part of a plot to explode a bomb on September 13 at a memorial ceremony in Kansas City, commemorating the 9/11 the terrorist attacks.

The affidavit, released by Special agent William Berry of US Customs and Border Protection, says that Goldberg had initially denied to officers that he had any involvement with distributing information on how to make a bomb, but then later admitted it.

“Goldberg further admitted that he believed the information would create a genuine bomb,” Agent Berry alleged.

However, Goldberg also claimed that he meant for the person he was communicating with to either kill himself creating the bomb or, that Goldberg intended to warn police in time so that he would receive “credit for stopping the attack”.

In conversations with Fairfax Media, which were also cited in the affidavit, Mr Goldberg had said he did not expect any jihadist to actually carry out an attack because: “These guys are pussy keyboard warriors”.

Fairfax media can also reveal that Goldberg, as Australi Witness, is suspected of a number of other online hoaxes, including posing online as prominent Australian lawyer, Josh Bornstein.

Australi Witness’s online actions might have had fatal real-world consequences in May.

In the leadup to an exhibition in Garland, Texas, at which pictures of the Prophet Mohammed were to be displayed, “Australi Witness” tweeted the event’s address and reposted a tweet urging people to go there with “weapons, bombs or with knifes”.

Two Muslim men attempted an attack at the exhibition, and were killed by police. Australi Witness then praised them online as martyrs.

A tweet from Australi Witness.

A tweet from Australi Witness. Photo: Twitter

Australi Witness also urged followers to target Australian cartoonist Larry Pickering, who has previously depicted the Prophet Mohammed.

The Australi Witness persona fooled members of the international intelligence community as well as journalists, with well-known analyst Rita Katz of SITE Intelligence Group saying the “IS supporter” held a “prestige” position in online jihadi circles and was “part of the hard core of a group of individuals who constantly look for targets for other people to attack”.

Ms Katz has previously acted as a consultant for US and foreign governments and testified before Congress on online terrorist activities.

The Australian Federal Police were unaware of Australi Witness’s real identity as Goldberg until contacted by journalists working on behalf of Fairfax Media.

In the Bornstein hoax, Goldberg established a blog on the Times of Israel in the lawyer’s name before posting an inflammatory article calling for the “extermination” of Palestinians. The Times retracted the article and apologised, and Bornstein went public with the story saying “I deplore racism…I’ve fought racism since I was four years old”.

When confronted, Goldberg boasted he had avoided detection, saying, “That guy has no idea. He thinks [online radical right wing website] Daily Stormer did it.” He also said he wanted to obtain Bornstein’s real life address, in order to “freak him out even more”.

In conversations and in articles written under his real name, Goldberg repeatedly professed to be an advocate for free speech, and showed disdain for organisations and individuals who call for limits on hate speech or hate speech laws.

As Australi Witness, he publicly linked himself to Amnesty International, saying that he used to work there. The fake jihadi also claimed a friendship with anti-Islamophobia campaigner Mariam Veiszadeh, but only to smear her reputation.

In online conversations, Goldberg said: “I wanna smear Amnesty and Mariam Veiszadeh…Amnesty is already in hot water over their links to CAGE, I wanna cement their jihadist connections and ruin their reputation. And Mariam is a Muslim whore, so smearing her as a jihadist should be easy.”

Ms Veiszadeh said she was not suprised at Goldberg’s arrest, saying she had “fallen within his radar” because of the campaign by an anti-Muslim hate group, the Australian Defence League, who campaigned to “incite hatred and violence towards me from across the globe.”

Mr Bornstein declined to comment.

Remembering September 11 1973

Remembering September 11 1973

Were the lives of those killed at the World Trade Centre more valuable than the innocents murdered in Chile’s US-backed coup, asks Tito Tricot

Our dreams were shattered one cloudy morning when the military overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. Twenty-nine years later, at midday, Chile’s’s firemen sounded their sirens paying tribute to thousands of men and women who lost their lives without really understanding what was happening.

It was a moment of remembrance, not for the victims of the military coup, but for those killed at the World Trade Centre in New York. Sad as that might have been, it is even sadder that Chilean firemen have never sounded their sirens to remember our own dead. And there are thousands of them, including many children, who were murdered by the military.

It is not a matter of comparing sorrow and pain, but for the past year the US media has tried to convince us that north American lives are worth more than other people’s lives. After all, we are from the third world, citizens of underdeveloped countries who deserve to be arrested, tortured and killed. How else are we interpret the fact that the military coup in our country was planned in the United States?

The truth is that no US president ever shed a tear for our dead; no US politician ever sent a flower to our widows. The US government and media use different standards to measure suffering. It is precisely this hypocrisy and these double standards that make us sick, especially when on such a symbolic day for Chileans, the president of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, attended a memorial service at the United States embassy where the ambassador, William Brownfield, stated that “people who hate the United States must be controlled, arrested or eliminated”.

In what kind of a world are we living? Can we stand idly by while in the name of the fight against terrorism countries are bombed or invaded by the US war machine? I think not, especially because, irrespective of the horror of the World Trade Centre attacks, the US has no moral right to impose its will on our continent. After all, we in Latin America have ample experience with US terrorist tactics. In our continent alone 90,000 people disappeared as a direct result of the operation of the School of the Americas and US “counterinsurgency” policies – 30 times more than the victims of the World Trade Centre.

One cannot – and should not – attempt to quantify suffering, but we do have the right to denounce this double standard. We also have the right to question President Lagos’s assertion that “for the youth of today what happened in 1973 is part of history, which means we must undertake the task of looking to the future”. Only a few hours after the president’s speech, thousands of people – mostly young people- took over parts of Santiago and other Chilean cities to express their true feelings about this fateful day in Chile’s history. They organised demonstrations, candle-lit vigils, concerts, meetings, seminars and put up barricades to defend themselves from the police.

It was a way of saying: Neither the United States nor anybody has the right to steal our memory. No one has the right to steal our day, for September the 11 1973 is marked in our hearts with tears.

Declassified documents reveal the US government’s role
in the Pinochet coup

by Peter Kornbluh

The Nation magazine, September 29, 2003

In September 14, 1970, a deputy to then National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger wrote him a memo, classified SECRET / SENSITIVE, arguing against covert operations to block the duly elected Chilean socialist Salvador Allende from assuming the presidency. “What we propose is patently a violation of our own principles and policy tenets,” noted Viron Vaky. “If these principles have any meaning, we normally depart from them only to meet the gravest threat to us., e.g. to our survival. Is Allende a mortal threat to the U.S.?” Vaky asked. “It is hard to argue this.”

Kissinger ignored this advice. The next day he participated in a now-famous meeting where President Nixon instructed CIA Director Richard Helms to “save Chile” by secretly fomenting a coup to prevent Allende’s inauguration. When those covert operations failed, Kissinger goaded Nixon into instructing the entire national security bureaucracy “on opposing Allende” and destabilizing his government. “Election of Allende as president of Chile poses one of [the] most serious challenges ever faced in this hemisphere,” says a newly declassified briefing paper Kissinger gave to Nixon two days after Allende’s inauguration. “Your decision as to what to do may be most historic and difficult foreign affairs decision you will have to make this year…. If all concerned do not understand that you want Allende opposed as strongly as we can, result will be steady draft toward modus vivendi approach.”

Had Washington adopted a “modus vivendi approach,” it is possible that Chileans, indeed citizens around the world, would not be solemnly commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the coup that brought Gen. Augusto Pinochet to power. In the United States, the meaning of this anniversary is, understandably, overshadowed by the shock and tragedy of our own 9/11. But Chile reminds us that the topics of debate on US foreign policy today-pre-emptive strikes, regime change, the arrogance of unilateral intervention, unchecked covert action and secrecy and dishonesty in government-are not new. From the thousands of formerly classified US documents released over the past several years, the picture that emerges strikes some haunting parallels with the news of the day.

Chile, it must be recalled, constitutes a classic example of a preemptive strike-a set of operations launched well before Salvador Allende set foot in office. Nixon ordered the CIA on September 15, 1970, to “make the economy scream” and to foment a military move to block Allende from being inaugurated six weeks later, in November; the Chilean leader had yet to formulate or authorize a single policy detrimental to US interests. “What happens over [the] next 6-10 months will have ramifications far beyond US-Chilean relations,” Kissinger predicted in a dire warning to Nixon only forty-eight hours after Allende actually took office. “Will have effect on what happens in rest of LA and developing world; our future position in hemisphere; on larger world picture…even effect our own conception of what our role in the world is.”

As in the distorted threat assessment on Iraq, this was sheer speculation-unsupported, indeed contradicted, by US intelligence. In August 1970 CIA, State and Defense Department analysts had determined that “the US has no vital national interests within Chile,” and that the world “military balance of power would not be significantly altered” if Allende came to power. But an Allende victory would create “considerable political and psychological costs,” including “a definite psychological advance for the Marxist idea.”

Indeed, the recently declassified record reveals that what really bothered the White House was not what actions a narrow, distant country that Kissinger had once disparaged as “a dagger pointed at the heart of Antarctica” could take but the fact that Allende could establish a model for democratic socialist change. As Kissinger informed Nixon on November 5, 1970, the “example of [a] successful elected Marxist gov. in Chile would have .[an] impact on-and even precedent value for-other parts of the world, especially Italy. . .similar phenomenon elsewhere would in turn significantly affect world balance and our own position in it.” When the President convened his National Security Council the next day to discuss how to “hurt” Allende and “bring him down,” he made this point: “Our main concern in Chile is the prospect that [Allende] can consolidate himself and the picture presented to the world will be his success.”

The story of US efforts toward regime change in Chile is well known. Since Allende was democratically elected (with a margin of victory that far exceeded George Bush’s edge in Florida), operations needed to be covert, and plausibly deniable. For three years the CIA engaged in a destabilization campaign in Chile-what CIA Director William Colby described in secret testimony as “a prototype or laboratory experiment” to discredit and undermine an elected government. Covert ops consisted of political action to divide Allende’s coalition; massive propaganda operations aimed at disrupting the economy and discrediting the government; covert funding of opposition political parties, including those agitating for a coup; and contacts with the Chilean military.

By necessity, these operations were accompanied by rampant official deception. WhenAllende was brought down by a vicious military coup led by General Pinochet on September 11, 1973, Kissinger testified later before the Senate Poreign Relations Committee that “the intent of the United States was not to destabilize or to subvert [Allende] but to keep in being [opposition] political parties.” Kissinger also testified that Washington was maintaining a “neutral” policy toward the incoming junta. In reality, within forty-eight hours of the coup, a cable went to the embassy with this secret message for Pinochet: “The USG wishes [to] make clear its desire to cooperate with the military junta and to assist in any appropriate way.”

Washington had worked to destabilize a democratically elected government; now US officials rushed to help a cutthroat dictatorship consolidate its rule-with full knowledge of the atrocities it was committing. “I think we should understand our policy,” Kissinger admonished his top aides as reports of mass slaughter flowed into Washington in the several weeks following the coup: “However unpleasant they act, this government is better for us than Allende was.” But when the CIA covert operations were exposed a year later by Seymour Hersh in the New York Times, US officials publicly defended their actions on the grounds that their policies were intended to preserve democracy in Chile, not foster a climate for a coup. This was, submitted President Gerald Ford in one of the most famous official statements regarding US intervention against Allende, “in the best interest of the people of Chile and certainly in our best interest.”

Pinochet murdered more than 3,100 Chileans, disappeared | 1,100 and tortured and jailed thousands more. He closed the ‘ Chilean Congress, banned political parties, censored the press and took over the universities. Through decree, the barrel of the gun and the touch of the electrode he imposed a seventeen-year dictatorship that became synonymous with human rights abuses at home and terrorist atrocities abroad-including the 1976 car-bombing that killed Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffitt in Washington, DC.

According to declassified memos and cables, at least some US officials acknowledged that the regime was neither in the best interests of Chile nor of the United States. Defense Intelligence Agency analysts compared Pinochet’s secret police, DINA, to Hitler’s Gestapo. “A documented case can be made for the proposition that the current regime in Chile is militaristic, fascistic, tyrannical and murderous ‘ one State Department intelligence analyst imported in early 1974. Washington’s support for the Pinochet regime, another State Department official wrote in a memo to the Assistant Secretary for Latin America a year later, “is one more reason why much of the youth of this country is alienated from their government and its foreign policy.” “In the minds of the world at large, we are closely associated with this junta, ergo with fascists and torturers,” according to Richard Bloomfield. “Chile is just the latest example for a lot of people in this country of the United States not being true to its values.”

That is, perhaps, the only positive aspect of the legacy of US policy and operations in Chile. Along with concerns about Vietnam, public and Congressional anger over events in Chile generated a national debate about the corruption of American principles in the making and the exercise of US foreign policy. The Kissingerian disregard for Pinochet’s abuses incited the mobilization and institutionalization of the human rights movement as we know it today; indeed, during the mid-1970s, Chile became the battleground of the first major fight between Congress and the executive branch over making human rights a criterion in US foreign policy. Similarly, revelations of CIA intervention in Chile contributed to a dramatic national reevaluation of the propriety of such practices and to the first Congressional hearings on covert action. The public reaction to US policy in Chile reflected widespread alarm over the abuses of power and secrecy inside the executive branch and a demand that US conduct abroad return to the moral precepts of American society.

Thirty years later, public fears over government secrecy and deception are pervasive once again. To be sure, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan differ in many ways from the US intervention in Chile; and the security threat of terrorism, as opposed to the non-threat of Allende’s election, is real, as we know from our own 9/11. Even so, in the wake of September 11, 2001, the lessons of September 11, 1973, demand to be remembered, as US foreign policy becomes further removed from the values, morality and real national interests of the American public. As Secretary of State Colin Powell was forced to concede when questioned about Chile on the eve of the invasion of Iraq: “It is not a part of American history that we are proud of.

The Other 9/11

September 11 is a date marked by violence and sorrow in the minds of many around the world. For Chileans, it is doubly so, because on that day, in 1973, the country’s democratically elected president, Salvador Allende was overthrown in a brutal military coup. What followed were years of repression, torture, forced disappearance, fear and for many Chileans, exile. This is the story of what happened in Chile, and the secret part Australia played.

Chapter 1

The Coup

“I will pay for my loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seeds that we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever.”

Salvador Allende, September 11, 1973

The last photograph of President Allende – inspecting La Moneda (presidential palace), shortly before his death.

On the morning of September 11, 1973, President Salvador Allende, was secluded in La Moneda, Chile’s Presidential Palace, along with his bodyguards. For weeks there had been mounting political uncertainty, and now, there were soldiers in Santiago’s streets. The President couldn’t get solid information on what was happening. He knew that earlier that morning, the Navy had taken the port of Valparaiso, north of the capital, but since then the army had shut down several of the city’s television and radio stations and bombed most of the others.

Allende, Chile’s first democratically elected socialist, hoped that only some elements of the armed forces had betrayed him, and that the leadership of the military would uphold the constitution. But within hours the army announced that it had taken control of Chile and that Allende was deposed by a military coup d’état, led by General Augusto Pinochet.

Despite the army’s threats that it would blow up La Moneda, the President refused to surrender. Instead, he gave a farewell speech, broadcast on the last radio station still broadcasting.

“I will pay for my loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seeds that we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shrivelled forever.”

When troops entered La Moneda, they found the President dead. He had shot himself (the gun was a present from Fidel Castro) rather than allow the military to arrest him.

As bombs rained down on the presidential palace, Chile’s democracy came to an end.

On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military, led by general Augusto Pinochet, launched an assault on the presidential palace. While under siege, President Allende chose to give a speech.
US President Nixon with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Washington D.C., 25 Aug. 1970.

Chile had boasted a long and stable democratic tradition in a politically fragile region beset by civil war and dictatorship. But democracy was not to return for 17 years.

President Nixon and his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, had been nervous about Allende since well before his election in 1970, as they knew his socialist policies would harm US business interests, like copper mining.

“But they also wanted Allende to fail because they were very afraid that the socialist experiment would be successful and would encourage other left-of-centre parties in a variety of Latin American countries to try the same thing – bring about socialism by democratic means,” says John Dinges, a journalist and author who has written extensively about Chile and who was in Santiago at the time of Pinochet’s coup.

The CIA was funnelling cash to Chile’s right-wing media outlets and Allende’s political opponents. But when it looked like he would win the 1970 presidential election, the agency stepped up its covert activities.

Declassified CIA documents reveal America’s hand in destabilising Allende’s government in 1970.

General René Schneider, head of Chile’s armed forces, was a constitutionalist, and respected the professional, non-political role of the military. He stood in the way of the military coup that the United States hoped would work as a last-ditch effort to keep Allende out of power. So in the lead-up to the 1970 elections, the CIA provided machine guns and cash to a group of plotters who planned to kidnap Schneider and send him to Argentina, leaving the way clear for a military takeover. But the kidnapping went badly wrong, and the General ended up dead.

The CIA rushed to cover its tracks, paying the jailed plotters $53,000 in hush money and throwing the machine guns they’d lent them into the sea. The army, and Chilean society, upset by the attempt to destroy proper democratic process, rallied around Allende. He was elected on 4 September, 1970. Now, the US would focus it efforts on undermining Allende’s government.

“They were actually organising a coup in 1970,” says John Dinges, but in the lead-up to 1973, the CIA was “very much in the background, doing things like fomenting the economic subversion, paying off right wingers to do violence in the streets – stuff like that.”

Nixon instructed his administration to “make the economy scream,” and before long, it would.

“The US definitely wanted the economy to fail so that the military would overthrow Allende,” says Dinges. “They promoted an economic blockade, preventing Chile from getting credits from international aid associations like the World Bank and the IMF.”

Meanwhile, nervous that Allende had them under close watch and that he may close the US embassy, removing their cover, the CIA called on its friends and allies to help out.

Chapter 2

Australia’s Spies in Chile

“It has been written – and I cannot deny it – that when my Government took office, Australian intelligence personnel were working as proxies of the CIA in destabilising the government of Chile.”

Gough Whitlam, Prime Minister of Australia, 1972-75

Gough Whitlam, Prime Minister of Australia (1972-75).

After a formal request from the United States, two officers from the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, or ASIS, were stationed in Santiago. By 1972, the officers had agreed to manage three agents on the CIA’s behalf and to relay information to Washington.

“The idea of taking over for one of the allies in Chile wasn’t a new thing – it was the pattern of helpful smaller ally being given pieces of work,” says Nicky Hager, author and journalist specialised in intelligence.

In 1972, Labor’s Gough Whitlam became Prime Minister, bringing progressive politics to Canberra after more than two decades of conservative government. One of the things set to change was foreign policy.

Bill Robertson, then head of Australia’s Secret Service, had the unhappy task of informing Mr Whitlam that his spies were helping the CIA to undermine a fellow progressive, left-wing government in South America.

There are different accounts of what came next. Whitlam has said he was appalled at the news, and ordered the officers to be pulled out right away. But Robertson tells a different story. In a memo that he published to clear his name after Whitlam unceremoniously sacked him in 1975, Robertson refers to an “ASIS station in another country.” Expert commentators have concluded that he meant Chile.

The memo says Whitlam “agonised” over the decision to remove the ASIS agents, worrying that the US might “react adversely.” It says the Prime Minister declined to immediately sign the order to remove the ASIS agents, which Robertson presented when he first told Whitlam about their activities, and it was a couple of months before Whitlam acted.

The mere fact of Australia’s involvement in Chile only became public in 1977 when a Royal Commission, set up by Gough Whitlam to thoroughly investigate Australia’s security services, made its report. The Hope Report, named for the Commissioner, Justice Robert Hope, was, on the whole, sanguine in its attitude to spycraft:

“Espionage is illegal and the clandestine service’s job is to break those laws without being caught. Espionage is deceptive, covert, underhand. It is probably the second oldest profession in the world.”

Redacted extracts from the Hope Report (Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security).

The full implications of ASIS’s role in Chile was never examined by the Royal Commission, and the Hope Report certainly did not condemn it:

“At no time was ASIS approached by the CIA, or made aware of any plans that may have been prepared, to affect the internal political situation in Chile. The ASIS station in Santiago was concerned only with intelligence gathering via the agents handed over to it.”

But not everyone was convinced that the Australians could have been so perfectly insulated from the CIA’s efforts – at the behest of none other than President Nixon – to unseat Allende.

Bill Robertson, director of ASIS (1968-75)

In May 1977 Whitlam himself told the Parliament:

“It has been written – and I cannot deny it – that when my Government took office, Australian intelligence personnel were working as proxies of the CIA in destabilising the government of Chile.’

“We still don’t know exactly what the agents were doing, and we’re unlikely to ever know” , says Nicky Hager. Nothing new emerged with the declassification of thousands of documents by the Clinton administration in 2000.

“I think there’s no doubt at all that there would be detailed discussions between Australia and the US and Australia would be saying ‘we don’t want this to come out’,” says Hager. “They know it would be unpopular and would look bizarre inside Australia that they were involved in Chile, so I put money on it that they’ve asked the US not to release information that shows what the Australian operations were.”

Robertson’s Memorandum, lodged in National Archives in 2011.

ASIS handed back the agents it was running to the CIA around May 1973. The first of the two ASIS officers left in July, and the second was out of Chile by October – just after the coup ended Allende’s presidency. But that wasn’t the end of Australia’s spy presence in Chile.

Other accounts have emerged to show that agents from ASIO, the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation, which normally focuses on domestic security, were in Santiago well into Pinochet’s reign, working out of the Australia Embassy.

In 1983, in a documentary called “Allies”, Whitlam’s former Minister for Immigration, Clyde Cameron, told reporter Marian Wilkinson that he had known of ASIO’s work on behalf of the CIA.

Chapter 3

The Sanctuary

Once in power, Chile’s military imposed an atmosphere of terror. Soldiers occupied the streets of Chile’s major cities, where gunfire was heard throughout the night, now subject to a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

Suspected left-wing activists were rounded up and detained, and many of them tortured. Pinochet’s secret police, the DINA (Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional), operated outside the criminal justice system: there was no official arrest, no trial and no public record of the thousands of people who ‘disappeared’ during the dictatorship. The authorities gave detainees’ families no information, and when families came looking, the regime denied any knowledge of detainees’ whereabouts. Meanwhile, it was not uncommon to see bodies alongside the road, or floating in Santiago’s Mapocho River.

In recognition of the many Chileans who needed to escape danger at home, the Whitlam government, with bipartisan support, created a special program for Chilean refugees. Between 1974 and 1981, about 6,000 Chileans were taken in, and hundreds more joined them as part of the family reunion program. In 1971, there were 3,760 Chileans living in Australia, but by 1991, just a year after Pinochet’s regime came to an end, there were 24,042.

Scene from anti-Pinochet protest captured by ASIO camera. Melbourne, September 11, 1974.

The Chilean community in Australia is, like Chilean society, divided along anti- and pro-Pinochet lines. Not everyone who arrived in Australia was a dissident seeking exile from the secret police.

Victor Marrillanca, a former public servant and long-time broadcaster for Spanish community radio in Canberra, arrived as a refugee in 1975. He says that people who had been involved in atrocities as part of Pinochet’s regime migrated to Australia, while others attempted to do so.

“It’s well known that members of the secret police and the secret services of Chile were coming to Australia,” he says. “We stopped two cases, as we found out in time that two members of the secret police in Chile were coming to Australia. They had the tickets, they had everything ready. We made enquires in Australia and Chile and we met with [then-Minister for Immigration under the Hawke/Keating governments] Gerry Hand, and he put a stop to the two cases… There are lot of cases that we’d let the authorities and also the Australian press know about – people from the Chilean secret police arriving in Australia, posing as refugees and Australia accepting them.”

“I’m sure it’s true that there are DINA people here who participated in executions and torture,” says journalist and author Mark Aarons. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. I’d heard from people who were treating victims of torture from Chile that a number of people had been re-traumatised because they’d seen people who had tortured them living here, often a suburb away.”

Aarons is convinced that not all of those Chilean immigrants who had engaged in torture and extrajudicial killings had merely ‘slipped through the cracks’ of Australian immigration controls. “I had relatively good contacts in old spy circles and some of them were absolutely adamant that some of the people with whom ASIS, in particular, had been involved in the early 1970s period – the period between the election of Allende and the coup – had been resettled here in quite a deliberate way and had been utilised for intelligence purposes, mostly gathering information on the local Chilean community.”

Anti-Pinochet protest to mark the first anniversary of the coup in Chile. The protest was filmed by ASIO – Sept 11, 1974, Melbourne.

Investigations in Chile have determined that during Pinochet’s reign, more than 3,196 people were killed and some 32,000 tortured. The hundreds of bodies that have been discovered in mass and hidden graves still do not add up to the thousands of names on the lists of Chile’s disappeared.

Efforts to convict Pinochet for crimes committed under his rule never succeeded, and he died a natural death in 2006, at age 91. The former head of DINA, Manuel Contreras, is serving 25 sentences totaling 289 years in prison for kidnapping, forced disappearance and assassination.

Chapter 4

Home Truths

Adriana at military parade, Santiago, Chile (1975).

Adriana Rivas

“They had to break the people – it happened all over the world, not only in Chile.”

At 20 years of age, she was plucked from her class at secretarial school – “I was one of the best,” she says – and taken to work at the Ministry for Defence. First, she was a secretary to one of the bureaucrats. Later, she jumped at the chance to move up, taking a course to become an intelligence agent. In 1974, she began working for Contreras at the infamous DINA (Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional), Chile’s secret police.

Adriana, who grew up in a modestly middle-class Santiago family, has happy memories of her time working with Pinochet’s regime. “Of course, it was exciting, traveling in limousines and staying at all the best hotels in the country.”

Adriana says she was never interested in politics – not before the coup, nor after. But she thinks Pinochet was a good president for Chile.

“He was a good President,” she says. “We could go out without any fear. Everything was calm.”

She defends the former dictator, and her old boss, Contreras.

“People say, ‘the President did this, Contreras did that.’ But it’s not true,” says Adriana. “The people who did that were officers in the middle ranks. Pinochet and Contreras didn’t give the orders. I don’t think so. I can’t put my hand in the fire for them, but I don’t think they did.”

She didn’t know anything about the forced disappearances, she says, until after she left her job at DINA.

“It’s one thing to kill people, but it’s another to make their bodies disappear. Many people died – it was a civil war. But disappearing the bodies – it makes my heart ache. It wouldn’t have been so painful if they had only handed over the bodies.”

And while she doesn’t approve of torture, she says that in a situation like Chile’s, it was necessary. “They had to break the people – it has happened all over the world, not only in Chile.”

In 1978 she came to live in Australia. She went home to Chile several times, but on her last visit, she was detained for questioning over a case of kidnapping and forced disappearance by DINA, claims which she strongly denies.

Mariana Minguez.

Mariana Minguez

“When you disappear nobody knows who took you, what they’ve done with you. They could have killed us and nobody would find us.”

Mariana Minguez was only 19 when she and her husband were ‘disappeared’ by DINA, Chile’s secret police, in 1984.

She was held in a secret detention centre for 8 days.

“I was tortured, I was raped, I was tortured with electricity, I was hit. I was abused in all the different ways that a human being can be abused. They didn’t care that I was pregnant.”

Mariana and her husband had been working with the Church to help young people and pregnant women in the poor outskirts of Santiago.

It wasn’t political work, she says, “but it created a consciousness that the government wasn’t doing the best for the people, so in a way that was dangerous.”

They were formally arrested after the Church pressured the police about their disappearance. “We were accused of having explosives and weapons – of so many things which were not true.”

Pregnant with her first baby, Mariana was forced to have a caesarean. “I was just by myself in one room with four beds in the room. The rest of the beds were used by the secret agents – they had to be around me all the time.  There were people with machine guns, you know what I am saying?”

They separated her from her baby and none of her family was allowed to visit.

“That was my first baby. You always expect the best for your first baby and then… Yeah. I did not get that.”

After she and her husband were released on bail, they lived in fear. They decided to escape and went to the United Nations for help.

They arrived in Australia in 1988. Exile meant safety, but it meant loss, too.

“It’s been 25 years. It wasn’t an easy process. At first I was always depressed, always crying, feeling like I had to stay in bed.”

“I learned to grow up and grow out of that situation. I don’t feel like a victim anymore. A victim is someone who has been defeated by something and I don’t feel Pinochet defeated us. My husband and I, we still love each other. I studied, I worked hard, I became a nurse. I continue living.”

She would like to see the Australian government acknowledge the part it played in Chile at that time, but she doesn’t believe that will happen.

“I have never seen justice done and I don’t think I will see it. I have decided not to wait for it. I don’t want to stay stuck in that situation.”

Stanford scholar casts new light on Hindu-Muslim relations

Stanford scholar casts new light on Hindu-Muslim relations

Stanford religious historian Audrey Truschke uncovers a surprising cultural alliance between Muslim and Hindu elites in early Sanskrit texts. Her findings could help ease current tensions between the two groups.

Chester Beatty Library, DublinMughal artwork of religious scholars engaging in discussion

Mughal artwork depicts Emperor Akbar presiding over discussions in the Hall of Religious Debate, ca. 1600. Scholar Audrey Truschke says her research shows that much of the current religious conflict in India has been fueled by ideological assumptions about the Mughal period rather than an accurate rendering of the subcontinent’s history.

In recent years, as tensions between Hindus and Muslims have mounted, India’s government has been accused of instigating or condoning numerous acts of violence against Muslims.

Popular thought in India holds that the origin of this conflict goes back centuries to medieval times, when Muslims expanded into the Indian subcontinent.

According to Audrey Truschke, a Mellon postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Religious Studies, however, much of the current religious conflict in India has been fueled by ideological assumptions about that period rather than an accurate rendering of the subcontinent’s history.

In her new book, Culture of Encounters: Sanskrit at the Mughal Court (Columbia University Press, forthcoming), Truschke says that the heyday of Muslim rule in India from the 16th to 18th centuries was, in fact, one of “tremendous cross-cultural respect and fertilization,” not religious or cultural conflict.

In her study of Sanskrit and Persian accounts of life under the powerful Islamic dominion known as the Mughal Empire, she provides the first detailed account of India’s religious intellectuals during this period.

Her research paints a far different picture than common perceptions, which assume that the Muslim presence has always been hostile to Indian languages, religions and culture. A leading scholar of South Asian cultural and intellectual history, Truschke argues that this more divisive interpretation actually developed during the colonial period from 1757 to 1947.

“The British benefited from pitting Hindus and Muslims against one another and portrayed themselves as neutral saviors who could keep ancient religious conflicts at bay,” she says. “While colonialism ended in the 1940s, the modern Hindu right has found tremendous political value in continuing to proclaim and create endemic Hindu-Muslim conflict.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has been criticized for being anti-Muslim. Modi was chief minister of Gujarat state, where in 2002 Hindu mobs killed more than 1,000 Muslims; he was widely blamed for failing to stem the violence. As a result, the United States denied Modi a visa for more than a decade until 2014 when it became clear that Modi would be India’s next prime minister.

Truschke argues that the ideology underpinning such violence – one that Modi himself openly embraces – erroneously “erases Mughal history and writes religious conflict into Indian history where there was none, thereby fueling and justifying modern religious intolerance.”

Her work shows that the Muslim impulse in India was not aimed at dominating Indian culture or Hinduism. She hopes her findings “will provide a solid historiographical basis for intervention in modern, political rewritings of the Indian past.”

Correcting the record

Truschke, one of the few living scholars with competence in both Sanskrit and Persian, is the first scholar to study texts from both languages in exploring the courtly life of the Mughals. The Mughals ruled a great swath of the Indian subcontinent from the early 16th to the mid-18th centuries, building great monuments like the Taj Mahal.

Over several months in Pakistan and 10 months in India, Truschke traveled to more than two dozen archives in search of manuscripts. She was able to analyze the Mughal elite’s diverse interactions with Sanskrit intellectuals in a way not previously done.

She has accessed, for example, six histories that follow Jain monks at the Mughal court as they accompanied Mughal kings on expeditions, engaged in philosophical and religious debates, and lived under the empire’s rule. These works collectively run to several thousand pages, and none have been translated into English.

Truschke found that high-level contact between learned Muslims and Hindus was marked by collaborative encounters across linguistic and religious lines.

She said her research overturns the assumption that the Mughals were hostile to traditional Indian literature or knowledge systems. In fact, her findings reveal how Mughals supported and engaged with Indian thinkers and ideas.

Early modern-era Muslims were in fact “deeply interested in traditional Indian learning, which is largely housed in Sanskrit,” says Truschke, who is teaching religion courses at Stanford through 2016 in association with her fellowship.

Hybrid political identity

Truschke’s book focuses on histories and poetry detailing interactions among Mughal elites and intellectuals of the Brahmin (Hindu) and Jain religious groups, particularly during the height of Mughal power from 1560 through 1650.

As Truschke discovered, the Mughal courts in fact sought to engage with Indian culture. They created Persian translations of Sanskrit works, especially those they perceived as histories, such as the two great Sanskrit epics.

For their part, upper-caste Hindus known as Brahmins and members of the Jain tradition – one of India’s most ancient religions – became influential members of the Mughal court, composed Sanskrit works for Mughal readers and wrote about their imperial experiences.

“The Mughals held onto power in part through force, just like any other empire,” Truschke acknowledges, “but you have to be careful about attributing that aggression to religious motivations.” The empire her research uncovers was not intent on turning India into an Islamic state.

“The Mughal elite poured immense energy into drawing Sanskrit thinkers to their courts, adopting and adapting Sanskrit-based practices, translating dozens of Sanskrit texts into Persian and composing Persian accounts of Indian philosophy.”

Such study of Hindu histories, philosophies and religious stories helped the Persian-speaking imperialists forge a new hybrid political identity, she asserts.

Truschke is working on her next book, a study of Sanskrit histories of Islamic dynasties in India more broadly.

Indian history, especially during Islamic rule, she says, is very much alive and debated today. Moreover, a deliberate misreading of this past “undergirds the actions of the modern Indian nation-state,” she asserts.

And at a time of conflict between the Indian state and its Muslim population, Truschke says, “It’s invaluable to have a more informed understanding of that history and the deep mutual interest of early modern Hindus and Muslims in one another’s traditions.”

Introducing the First Vehicle Powered by Evaporation

Introducing the First Vehicle Powered by Evaporation

See how the toy car works

The first vehicle powered by evaporation frequently zooms along a laboratory bench these days at Columbia University. The 100-gram car relies on spore-coated tapes that expand and contract like tiny muscles as they move through environments of varying humidity. It can take up to 10 minutes to cross a table at the moment, but the biologists, chemists and engineers on the project think upgrades to the engine could enable it to power a wide range of technologies, including robotics systems and generators. For now the focus is on the small: another prototype can power two tiny LED lights.

Why The Black Hole Information Paradox Is Such A Problem

Why The Black Hole Information Paradox Is Such A Problem

I write about astrophysics, space, and the science of the Universe.

You might think it takes a lot of energy to escape Earth’s gravity, but our planet’s pull is tiny compared to many other things in the Universe. Same for our Sun, the galaxy, or even an extreme object like a neutron star. Instead, imagine a small, compact region of space that’s filled with so much matter and energy that you’d have to move faster than the speed of light to escape its gravitational pull. That’s exactly what a black hole is: a region where gravity is so intense that nothing — not even light — can escape from it.

Normally formed from the collapse of an ultra-massive star’s core, a black hole has such extreme properties that it inevitably collapses down to a singularity, where no known form of matter — even the fundamental particles — can stand up against it. Instead, the number of spatial dimensions is reduced to either a point a ring, and the known laws of physics break down.

The problem with black holes is with the information that goes into them. In the Universe as we understand it, there are certain properties of matter and energy that contain information. A particle like a proton or an electron contains not only a mass, an electric charge and a spin, but also other quantum properties like baryon number, lepton number, weak hypercharge, color charge, and quantum entanglements connecting one particle to another. If you form a black hole out of a whole host of particles (it normally takes some 10^58 of them), each with their own unique properties, including not just protons and electrons but also neutrons, photons, neutrinos, antineutrinos, positrons and more, you expect that information to meaningfully make its way into the black hole.

But black holes have no memory of that. In fact, as far as we can tell, black holes are completelydescribed by only three properties: their mass (governed by the total amount of matter and energy that went into them), their electric charge, and their angular momentum (which describes their spin).

So where did all that information go? A black hole made from the collapse of a normal star should, in theory, have wildly different information encoded in it than a black hole made from the collapse of (theoretically) an antimatter star, and yet that information is not encoded in a black hole! If I had two identical black holes, and added a bunch of neutrons to one while adding an equal mix of protons and electrons to the other until their masses were the same again, they should have different properties, as they should have different baryon (and lepton) numbers inside. Yet it’s known that no such difference exists. There’s no way to tell them apart.

You might think the event horizon of the black hole will save you, since that special location — the border between where light can and cannot escape — appears “frozen” in the sense that anything falling into it will always remain as encoded information on the surface, a property discovered back in 1939. But in 1974, Stephen Hawking showed that was inadequate. On long enough timescales, the quantum nature of the Universe, and the fact that there are particle-antiparticle fluctuations occurring in the curved space at the event horizon, means that black holes will emit a thermal, blackbody radiation that eventually leads to their decay.

Image credit: E. Siegel, on the quantum origin of Hawking Radiation.

Image credit: E. Siegel, on the quantum origin of Hawking Radiation.

This is a huge problem for physics, because that type of quantum information that went into the black hole is supposed to be one of those quantities that’s fundamentally conserved. But what comes out of that black hole — that thermal, blackbody radiation — contains none of that extra information!

So that’s what the paradox is. How do we resolve it? The general consensus among physicists is that there must be some way that we don’t yet understand (perhaps requiring a quantum theory of gravity) that actually does encode the information “frozen” on the event horizon into the outgoing radiation. But does that happen? And if so, how does that happen? The answer is this: nobody knows. Stephen Hawking’s big announcement last week was at best a small step only towards that answer, and most likely is a dead-end of an idea, like most hypothetical ideas on this front.

Whenever there’s a conflict between what our best theories predict:

  • that there are certain quantities that must be conserved,
  • and that the final state of a system contains different amounts of those conserved quantities than the initial state,

that’s an omen of scientific advance. That paradox is such a problem because it tells us that something about our present understanding is, in some way, incomplete. Is there a new law of physics? Is there a new application of the currently existing laws that we’ve missed? Are these quantities not fundamentally conserved after all? Is the information really encoded in the final state somehow? Will quantum gravity eventually make this all clear?

We hope to have the answer to this. But in the meantime, this paradox means we have a problem, and hence that we have more to learn. And for anyone curious about the scientific truths of the Universe, that’s an incredible thing: evidence that there’s still a whole lot more to be figured out.

Solar windows can power buildings

Not only do solar windows produce power, but some reduce heat

Manhattan has approximately 47,000 buildings with around 10.7 million windows, according to a 2013estimate from The New York Times.

Now imagine if just 1% — or 100,700 — of those windows could generate electricity through transparent photovoltaics.

That’s the idea behind solar power windows, and at least two companies are hoping to sell the technology to window manufacturers, saying once installed in a building the technology will pay for itself in about a year.

“If you look at the glass that’s manufactured worldwide today, 2% of it is used for solar panels; 80% of it is used in buildings. That’s the opportunity,” said Suvi Sharma, CEO of solar panel maker Solaria.

Solaria uses existing photovoltaic (PV) cells and slices them into 2.5mm strips. It then sandwiches those thin PV strips between glass layers in a window. “The way human eye works, you don’t even notice them,” Sharma said.

Solaria uses photovoltaic cells cut into 2.5mm strips and embedded in window glass in order to generate electricity. This is what a typical system would look like.

Computerworld's Best Places to Work in IT 2015: Company Listings

A compact list of the 56 large, 18 midsize and 26 small organizations that ranked as Computerworld’s

An additional benefit? As the PV strips absorb light striking a building’s window, they reduce the “solar heat gain coefficient”; in other words, the windows reduce the sunlight’s effect on a building’s internal air temperature and thereby lower air conditioning costs.

Solaria is targeting its technology for windows that will be installed in newly constructed buildings.

Another company, SolarWindow Technologies, is pitching a different form of transparent PV cell technology for new construction, replacement windows and retrofits to existing windows.

SolarWindow is using what it calls organic photovoltaics, which can vary in color and transparency. The company is planning to announce its product in a couple of weeks.

SolarWindow CEO John Conklin said what sets his company’s technology apart is its ease of integration. Because it’s based on a PV film, it can be adhered to existing windows or incorporated into manufactured products relatively easily.

Depending on the number of south-facing windows, which receive a majority of the sun’s light, and the building’s location in the U.S., Solaria’s technology could provide from 20% to 30% of a skyscraper’s energy needs, Conklin said.

Conklin would not disclose exactly which organic material SolarWindow uses.

In 2013, however, Oxford University researchers released the results of a study on how neutral-colored, semi-transparent solar cells made of perovskite could be used in building and car windows to generate electricity. Perovskite is an oxide used in ceramic superconductors.

screen shot 2015 09 03 at 1.41.18 pmOxford Energy

Oxford University professor Henry Snaith holds up a clear piece of glass that has a transparent perovskite solar cell film on it.

The Oxford researchers said they could create transparent solar cells with comparatively high efficiencies. For example, the researchers were able to drive PV efficiencies up to 20% in a “remarkably short period of time” using a simple cell architecture.

The university’s work is being commercialized by Oxford Photovoltaics (a spin-out company), which is planning to produce attractively colored and semi-transparent glass, which works as a solar cell and could be integrated into the facades of buildings and windows.

Similarly, a team of researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) has developed a new type of transparent solar concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy.

Called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator (TLSC), MSU’s technology can not only be used on building windows but also on cell phones and any other device that has a clear, uncolored surface.

transparentsolar 1408986548115Yimu Zhao

A team of researchers at Michigan State University has developed a new type of transparent solar concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy.

Richard Lunt of MSU’s College of Engineering said the key to the TLSC technology is that it’s completely transparent.

“No one wants to sit behind colored glass,” Lunt, an assistant professor of chemical engineering and materials science, said in a statement. “It makes for a very colorful environment, like working in a disco. We take an approach where we actually make the luminescent active layer itself transparent.”

MSU’s solar harvesting technology uses small organic molecules developed by Lunt and his team to absorb specific nonvisible wavelengths of sunlight.

One problem with MSU’s technology is that more work is needed to improve its energy efficiency. Currently it is able to produce a solar conversion efficiency close to 1%, but the researchers hope to achieve efficiencies beyond 5% when fully optimized.

Today, traditional solar power panels that reside in solar farms or on building rooftops can achieve a PV efficiency of about 15% to 20%. The efficiency rating refers to how much of the photons striking a solar cell are converted into energy.

Solaria’s solar window technology can achieve a solar effiency of about 8% to 10%. SolarWindow’s Conklin would not disclose his company’s technology efficiency rating, but did say it was less than standard PV panels.

“Obviously when you’re looking at absorbing visible light and it’s transparent, it’s not as efficient as an opaque panel,” Conklin said.

When it comes to solar windows, however, efficiency matters less than transparency, Conklin said.

zhao and lunt

Yimu Zhao, a doctoral student in chemical engineering and materials science at Michigan State University, and Richard Lunt, assistant professor of chemical engineering and materials science, run a test in Lunt’s lab. Lunt and his team have developed a new material that can be placed over windows and create solar energy.

“When you’re looking at transparent or clear photovoltaics, it’s not necessarily a function of power conversion efficiency as it is about using the vast amount of space available for that tech,” Conklin said. “We’re making use of the space that right now is not available for solar energy production. Passive windows are turned into active energy generating windows.”

In other words, transparent solar PV is about not wasting perfectly good real estate in order to supplement a building’s power requirements.

The solar window technologies utilize varying methods of transmitting the energy that the PVs produce to a building’s internal power infrastructure.

Solaria, for example, hides its wiring in the window’s frame, and the connectors are wired into a newly constructed building’s electrical conduits. Those conduits lead to a central power inverter, which converts the solar windows direct current to alternating current that’s usable in the electric grid.

SolarWindow’s technology can come with micro DC-to-AC power inverters, allowing the electricity to be used only in one room with a solar window. Alternately, it can be connected to a distributed microgrid inverter to power a single floor of a building or to a central inverter from which the entire building can draw power.

Solaria is already piloting its windows in “a few” buildings and it is working on the first large-scale commercial projects in California and Europe, according to Sharma. Sharma did not disclose the projects.

Solaria has also partnered with Tokyo-based Asahi Glass Co., a global glass manufacturer. Sharma said Asahi intends to sell both windows and a bamboo shade called Sudare with embedded solar cells from Solaria.

“So we’re enabling different glass and curtain wall providers in North America, Europe and Asia to provide products,” Sharma said.

Solar windows will cost about 40% more than conventional windows, but the ROI is achievable in under a year and there’s big demand even though products have yet to ship, the manufacturers say.

“It’s actually very viable and will be even more viable as we approach our product launch,” Conklin said. “It’s in very high demand because right now skyscrapers… don’t have a good way of offsetting energy through renewable energy generation.

Israel furious at UN report detailing torture of Palestinian children

Israel furious at UN report detailing torture of Palestinian children

Israel’s security forces have been accused by a United Nations monitoring group of torturing and tormenting Palestinian children.

The Committee on the Rights of Children, a body of independent legal experts charged by the UN with the task of monitoring the protection of children’s rights in signatory states, has urged Israel to honour its responsibility to prevent the torture and ill-treatment of children.

“The Committee expresses its deepest concern about the reported practice of torture and ill-treatment of Palestinian children arrested, prosecuted and detained by the military and the police, and about the State party’s failure to end these practices in spite of repeated concerns expressed by treaty bodies,” the investigative body stated in its periodic review of Israel’s child rights record, released on Thursday.

It continued: “[Palestinian children are] systematically subject to physical and verbal violence, humiliation, painful restraints, hooding of the head and face in a sack, threatened with death, physical violence, and sexual assault against themselves or members of their family, restricted access to toilet, food and water.

“These crimes are perpetrated from the time of arrest, during transfer and interrogation, to obtain a confession but also on an arbitrary basis as testified by several Israeli soldiers as well as during pretrial detention.”

The report prompted a furious response from Israel, countering that the findings are “not based on any direct investigation on the ground, only on documents gathered from secondary sources.”

Yigal Palmor, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, described the report’s allegations that Israel did not comply with requests for information as a “bold, scandalous lie”. Its allegations that Palestinian children are being used as informers and human shields, he added, are also deliberately misleading.

“The [committee] were fully informed that instructions have indeed been issued and that the use of children as human shields is totally forbidden. Yet the authors pretend there never was any such communication by Israel,” Mr Palmor said.

A UNICEF report investigating the treatment of Palestinian children published earlier this year described “widespread, systematic and institutionalised” abuse of minors detained by Israeli security forces in the West Bank, including night-time arrests and long periods of solitary confinement, but stopped short of describing this ill treatment as torture.

The report, which consulted closely with Israel’s foreign ministry, also praised the country’s efforts to improve its child rights record.

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has extensively documented the testimonies of Palestinian children abused in by Israeli security services.

Sarit Michaeli, the organisation’s spokesman, argued that while several improvements have been made there remain “major problems with Israel’s treatment of Palestinian minors”.

Yasmina Haifi.

A Project Leader at the Dutch National Cyber Security Center, who goes by the name Yasmina Haifi, was suspended from her job at the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice after tweeting that the terrorist group ISIS, led by Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi“does not exist,” and that it is “a Zionist plot to stain the image of Islam.”

Yasmina tweeted the following before being suspended from her job:

yasmina haifi

Her Tweet in Dutch translates to the following in English: “ISIS has nothing to do with Islam. It is a preconceived plan of Zionists who want to deliberately make Islam look bad.”

Right after tweeting the aforementioned statement, the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice and the Dutch National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) responded in opposition to Haifi’s statements.
They said that “Security and Justice and the NCTV distance themselves from her remarks. And since [the comment] relates to the work of the NCTV and the National Cyber Security Center, this will lead us to suspend her from NCSC/NCTV immediately.”

This “revelation” did not go mainstream and very few outlets around the globe reported about it, despite the huge consequences it may entail. In one of those few interviews she has given, Haifa told the Dutch Radio 1 that “I have taken the liberty to express myself and obviously I have to pay for it. I do not know why I should be suspended. This is what I think.”

“Apparently freedom of speech in the Netherlands applies to particular groups and not to others,” she told Radio 1.

The Moroccan Times contacted a leading political analyst, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of this information, to comment on this sweeping piece of news.

The political analyst told us that he believes “Haifa may have got her hands on secret documents indicating that ISIS is sponsored by Zionists, especially that the type of her work is closely related to National Cyber Security Center.”

“The type of her job requires her not to make public such information.

“Intelligence people who work on such sensitive jobs sign contract not to reveal anything and may spend a very long time behind bars in case they fail to honor the terms and conditions of their contract.

“As a political analyst, in my modest opinion, and especially as Haifa works in the Dutch Cyber Security Department, I believe she must have found some serious documents indicating that a zionist group financed ISIS.

“She is not someone who will just say anything like that. Those people [who work in the Dutch Cyber Security Department] are picked following a lengthy and difficult procedure. They have to go through a lot of tests to see if the are fit for the job.

“Haifa was just not a normal employee in there. She was a project leader, someone who supervises people. Such people don’t just open their mouths and say nonsense. Those are taught to think 10 times before uttering anything. That is a blow to anyone who may argue that she is uttering nonsense.

” I think she is a kind of whistleblower, like Edward Snowden or Chelsea manning. Her ethics did not allow her to keep this secret hidden, but she came after and kind of apologized in order to avoid jail, probably to avoid being subject to local laws like the American CFAA ones, aimed to silence whistleblowers.

“she sacrificed her job for the sake of the truth. Now it is up to us to understand,” the analyst closed.

Shocking West Bank image of boy with a broken arm being held at gunpoint by an Israeli soldier

Questions raised over shocking West Bank image of boy with a broken arm being held at gunpoint by an Israeli soldier after girl, 13, seen biting attacker is revealed as prolific ‘Pallywood star’

  • Israeli soldier was pictured pinning boy to the floor with machine gun held up near his cheek in the West Bank
  • But the gunman is ambushed by young girl who forces weapon from his hand and two women who claw at his face
  • Girl in pictures is believed to be Ahed Tamimi, whose parents Bassem and Nariman are Palestinian activists
  • She has appeared in a string of similar videos where she confronts Israeli soldiers and once won a bravery award
  • Clash happened during demonstrations against Palestinian land confiscation to expand nearby Jewish settlement

Questions have been raised over the authenticity of shocking images of a boy with a broken arm being held at gunpoint by an Israeli soldier after a 13-year-old girl seen biting his attacker is said to be a prolific ‘Pallywood star’.

The remarkable images which surfaced online on Friday appeared to show an IDF soldier armed with a machine gun grappling with the little boy as two women make desperate attempts to pull him off following protests in the West Bank.

A young girl is seen ambushing the balaclava-clad soldier by forcing the weapon from his hands and biting him before he flees the scene.

But it is thought the young girl in the photographs is Ahed Tamimi, whose parents Bassem and Nariman – also pictured – are well-known Palestinian activists in their village of Nabi Saleh.

The teenager has appeared in a string of similar videos where she challenges Israeli security forces and rose to prominence after she was filmed confronting one who arrested her brother, which resulted in her being presented with a bravery award.

She was handed the ‘Handala Award for Courage’ by the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Istanbul, where she reportedly expressed she would like to live.

Online blogs have dubbed her ‘Shirley Temper’ and accused her of being a ‘Pallywood’ star – a term coined by author Richard Landes, describing the alleged media manipulation by Palestinians to win public relations war against Israel.

Her father, Bassem al-Tamimi, was convicted by an Israeli military court in 2011 for ‘sending people to throw stones, and holding a march without a permit’ – a charge his lawyers deny.

He has been jailed eight times, while his wife has been detained five times. Other family members, including their son Waed, has also been arrested.

Bassem organises weekly protests and it was reportedly at one of these demonstrations that the shocking images are said to have been taken.

An Israeli army spokesman said that Palestinians had been throwing stones at an IDF force which was set up in the area.

An image has emerged on the internet of a boy, said to be the youth that was held at gunpoint, throwing rocks with one arm, while his other remained in plaster and in a sling.

The spokesman added that a decision was made to arrest the boy and it was during the detention that a ‘violent provocation’ began, including a number of Palestinian women and children.

He told Haaretz that there was ‘a violent disturbance of the peace in Nabi Saleh, in which Palestinians threw stones at IDF forces that were in the place.

‘The youth who was photographed was identified by the lookout force as a stone-thrower, and because of this it was decided to detain him. At the time of the arrest, a violent provocation by a number of Palestinians developed, including women and children. In light of the violent altercation, the commander decided to not to go ahead with the detention.’

He added: ‘Two additional Palestinian youths were arrested for throwing stones during the violent clashes. The soldier pictured was lightly wounded as a result of the violent actions against him.’

The clash happened in the village of Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah, during protests against Palestinian land confiscation to expand the nearby Jewish Hallamish settlement.

In another flashpoint, Palestinian protester hurled stones at Israeli army bulldozer during clashes which following a protest against Israeli settlements in Qadomem, Kofr Qadom village, near the the West Bank city of Nablus.

They come a day after the European Union’s outgoing envoy to the Palestinian territories said the 28-nation bloc was moving forward with measures against Jewish West Bank settlements.

The envoy, John Gatt-Rutter, did not provide a timeframe. But his remarks to reporters underline European discontent with Israel’s continued expansion of settlements in territory that Palestinians want for a future state.

Gatt-Rutter said ‘there is support within the union to go on’, adding that there are ‘more tools’ the EU can use.

The EU, Israel’s biggest trading partner, is exploring guidelines that would require Israel to label settlement products.

It already bars goods produced in settlements from receiving customs exemptions given to Israeli goods.

Gatt-Rutter’s remarks come as a grassroots movement promoting boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel is gaining steam.

15 points from ‘England’s Debt To India’ prove that Tharoor is right

15 points from ‘England’s Debt To India’ prove that Tharoor is right

15 points from “England’s Debt To India” prove that what Dr Shashi Tharoor said about British rule in India is True.shashi tharoor

Dr Shashi Tharoor raised some points at the Oxford Union about British rule in India. He pointed out that how British exhausted India resources for British Empire gain. We present 15 points which will prove that Dr. Tharoor spoke truth nothing more nothing less.

1. “The whole of the public debt of India, built up in a century of the company’s rule, was created by debiting India with the expenses incurred in England. India’s “Gift” of One Hundred Million Pounds to England. Since the above was put in type our work fears have come to be true .The British Government of India has decided, with the sanction of the secretary of state for India, to float a war loan in India of an unlimited amount The idea is to make a gift of $100,000,000 (or $500,000,000) to the British Exchequer. The amount of the loan , or as much is raised, will be made over to the Government of Great Britain and liability for the rest will be accepted by the Government of India. The British cabinet have , with the sanction of The house of commons, accepted this “gift” and in lieu therefore allowed the Indian Government to raise their customs duty on the imports of cotton goods by four valorem. This transaction involves an additional burden of $6000,000 a year (or$30,000,000) on the Indian tax payer. It is expected that out of this some $1,000,000 will be recovered by the additional duty on cotton imports and the rest will be raised by additional taxation.

2. The net amount remitted to England by representatives of East India Company on account of revenue, after defraying all the civil and military charges from 1765 to 1771 amounted to a little over four million pounds sterling. The total amount raised totalled a little over thirteen million pounds. Most of what constituted civil and military charges also went to England in one shape or another.

3. “India in the Victorian Age,” Dutt quotes the opinion of Colonel Sykes, a distinguished director of the East India Company, who “spoke of the economic drain from India of £3,300,000 to £3,700,000 a year” and remarked that “It is only by the excess of exports over imports that India can bear this tribute.”

4. Mr. A. J. Wilson, in an article in the Fortnightly Review, of March, 1884, wrote: “In one form or another we draw fully £30,000,000 a year from that unhappy country (India), and there the average wages of the natives is about £5 per annum, less rather than more in many parts. Our Indian tribute, therefore, represents the entire earnings of upwards of six millions heads of families — say of 30,000,000 of the people. It means the abstraction of more than one tenth of the entire sustenance of India every year.”

5. “The Truth About ‘The Drain,’ ” published and distributed free by the East India Association of London (April, 1909) : “What are the facts about the drain of India’s wealth into Great Britain? It has been assumed that there is a drain, but the nature and extent of this drain has been highly exaggerated, and sometimes grossly misrepresented. The official ‘drain’ is included in what are known as the ‘home charges,’ and these ‘Home charges’ for the three years from 1904 to 1907 amount on the average to £19,000,000 a year, reduced to about £18,000,000 by deducting sundry receipts. These £18,000,000 can roughly summarised and grouped under the following heads:

Book image_Hitesh Rangra 5

7. By 1844-45 the total debt of India had reached the figure of forty three and one-half million pounds. This included the enormous expense of the Afghan war to which England contributed only a small part of the fifteen millions expended, although in the words of John Bright, the whole of this expenditure “ought to have been thrown on the taxation of the people of England, because it was a war commanded by the English cabinet, for objects supposed to be English.”

Book image_Hitesh Rangra

8. Montgomery Martin wrote in 1838: “ This annual drain of £3,000,000 on British India, compounded in thirty years at 12 per cent. (the usual Indian rate) compound interest to the enormous sum of £723,997,917 sterling; . . . So constant and accumulating a drain even on England would soon have impoverished her; how severe then must be its effects on India, where the wages a labourer is from two-pence to three-pence a day?

Book image_Hitesh Rangra 1

9. Mr. Digby says: “ Estimates have been made which vary from £500,000,000 to nearly £1,000,000,000. Probably between Plassy and waterloo the last mentioned sum was transferred from Indian hoards to English banks. “ In estimating the loss to India in the nineteenth century the start must be made with Mr. Martin’s figures: “ Loss to India, prior to 1834-35 compound interest, at twelve per cent. £723,000,000 “The average annual loss, taking the trade tables alone, has been shown to be about £7,500,000.

10. “ Even leaving out the profit and taking no account of the opium monopoly, India has sustained a drain of nearly £280,000,000 in the twenty years. The exports for 1876-77 were £65,000,000, and the imports, exclusive of bullion, were £37,427,000, with bullion, nearly £49,000,000.”Book image_Hitesh Rangra 2

11. It is to be noted that in 1905-06 the public debt of India was classified as follows:- Railways, Irrigation and Ordinary was £149,035,455 £27,050,799 and £54,425,226.

12. “We give the following instances: 1. Lord Lytton’s Afghan Wars — ‘India bleeds silenly.’ 2. In 1890, our wars of pinpricks cost six or seven million pounds sterling. Once more, ‘India bleeds silently.’ 3. An agent trails his coat in Chitral, a war follows, India pays and the agent is Knighted and promoted. 4. The events of August 2 , 1897, take place beyond the Khyber Pass a serious war follows. Once more, India bleeds, — this time, happily, not quite in silence”.

13. The following Copper “ Copper ore is likewise widely distributed over the country, especially in the north, but it is nowhere now worked profitably, whereas the importation of copper amounts to nearly £2,000,000.”

shashi tharoor 1Extract from an article by A. Yusaf Ali, a retired Indian Civil Servant, published in The Nineteenth Century and After for February, 1917: “ The Indian Income Tax brings within its net only 3323,900 persons out of a of 244 millions in British India, the exemption limit being as low as 66 pounds (that is $330). Only 13,000 persons have an income of 666 pounds ($3,330) or over in British India.”

14. Extracts from an article by Mr. Manohar Lal, B. A. (Cantab), late Minto Professor of Economics in the University of Calcutta, published in the Indian Journal of Economics for July, 1916: “ The average income per head has remained the same (that is $10 a year) during the last thirty years and more …. It is a fact that deserves careful study at the hands of all students that with signs of growing prosperity everywhere, with an undoubted advance in the whole apparatus of industrial life, the average Indian income has remained stationary.

15. How the Villager: Live in the Madras Presidency — An Article from the Tribune of Lahore of January 19, 1917. In England and other European countries the study of the condition of the working classes has led to their improvement. A similar study of the condition of the Indian people is necessary to devise measures for their economic improvement. The Government were asked several times to hold such enquiries in villages exposed to frequent famines. But they thought that it would serve no useful purpose to do so. In England private individuals and public associations have aroused sympathy for the working classes and Government have readily adopted necessary reforms. It would be useful if similar work was undertaken by individuals and associations in India.

Says Mr. A. J. Wilson (“An Empire in Pawn”), p. 26: “The Indian people pay altogether more now than ever they did. More of the net prooeeds of their labour goes every year to pay the foreign debt charges under one head or another, because the aggregate of these charges increases.”

In the Israeli media, a soldier trying to arrest a minor is the victim

In the Israeli media, a soldier trying to arrest a minor is the victim

After viral video emerged of a soldier attempting to arrest a Palestinian boy, the Israeli press presents the official army version rather than the accounts of the villagers who saw it all happen.

By Leehee Rothschild

At the weekly demonstration at the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh last Friday a masked soldier tried to arrest 12-year-old Mohammad Tamimi. Mohammad’s arm had been broken and in a cast since the beginning of that week, when soldiers entered the village in a separate incident.

His sister, Ahed, his mother, Nariman, and another Palestinian woman eventually prevented the event. His sister and his mother, though, were beaten by soldiers and sent to the hospital.

Related stories

Quoted extensively in the Israeli press, the army’s version claimed that the soldiers were not aware that Mohammad was a minor. It is something that would have been very difficult to miss, given that he is a pretty small boy.  And I wonder how close a soldier would have to be to notice that the boy was in fact a child, and if he still wasn’t able to notice it when he had him in a headlock between his arms. I also doubt that realizing that the boy was a minor would have prevented the soldier from arresting him. The army has arrested Palestinian children before.

The report in the Israeli daily Haaretz starts with the army’s version and only afterwards describes, briefly, the events as seen by the village residents. That version is told by the activist Yonatan Pollack, but the reporter then returns to the army spokesperson.

The reporter does not mention that those involved were members of the same family, or that Mohammad was already injured, or that Ahed and Nariman were hospitalized after being hit by the soldiers. If the Haaretz writer had made just the slightest journalist efforts, she could have easily discovered these details.

The reporter from the popular news site, Ynet, inserts Israeli army statements alongside a number of paragraphs quoted from an article in the British Daily Mail on the events. They report that the Daily Mail’s coverage is biased against Israel, despite the fact that they heavily rely on it. The article’s headline, “A girl bites a solder: a violent demonstration in Judea and Samaria,” paints a picture in which the village residents are those who cause the violence while the soldiers are the victims of it. They describe the demonstration as violent and present as fact the army’s claim that Mohammad was throwing rocks just before the soldiers attempted to arrest him, despite the fact that this is actually disputed, and denied by the villagers.

They describe Ahed as winning fame for screaming at the soldier and attempt to portray her as violent and dangerous. Indeed, a girl standing and screaming in the face of an armed soldier is a recognized threat.

Ynet’s inability to see the Palestinians villagers through human eyes is also apparent in that they confuse Ahed’s name with “Bilal,” another participant at the Nabi Saleh demonstration. He filmed the viral video, but is an adult man, not a young girl.

The circumstances of the demonstration and clashes were mentioned nowhere in this reporting, nor was there any critique of the consistent violence toward the villagers.

The Haaretz report portrays just another Friday in the West Bank through the frame of the Israeli army spokesman. Ynet communicates to the Israeli public that “we are the victims and everyone else is anti-Semitic.” The important question they deal with is how the world will look see us, rather than the reasons as to why a soldier was trying to violently arrest a 12-year-old boy.
