Member of Travancore Royal family tells a tale of religious harmony: Muslims saved Padmanabhaswamy Temple from looters

Muslims saved Padmanabhaswamy Temple while it was under threat from a group of looters, Gouri Lakshmi Bai, a member of the Travancore royal family, said.

Speaking at an event organised by Dubai Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) marking the UAE national day, she said that the history of Kerala is all about religious harmony between Hindus and Muslims.

16 century Padmanabhaswamy temple, located in Thiruvanathapurm became the richest temple in the world when the Supreme Court appointed experts opened the five vaults in the temple on 27 June 2011

The valuables in the five vaults, estimated to be worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore, include gold coins weighing 1,000 kg, over a tonne of gold in the form of rice trinkets, a sack full of diamonds and a rare statue of Lord Vishnu studded with diamonds, emeralds and rubies.

She also remembered the legacy of Travancore kingdom that gave shelter to a number of Muslims during the time of chaos.

“Pathan Muslims in Kollam were quick to come to the rescue of the Padmanabhaswamy temple. They collected the money and gold asked by the group of assailants from Muslim households and gave it to them to avoid an attack on the temple,” she said.

She also cited another example of religious harmony in Travancore, in which a group of Haj pilgrims was invited as guests to the Padmanabhaswamy Temple when they left stranded without food and water, 200 years ago.

It was the Temple that rushed to help these haj pilgrims when they left unattended by the society. They were offered with food and water and sent off to Mecca

She also said that all human beings are the creatures of the God, beyond the boundaries of religion.

Muslim League State President Haidarali Shihab Thangal, PV Abdul Vahab MP and many Muslim League leaders attended the function.
